Rangers rock Oahe, 5-3, on Senior Night

BROOKINGS – The Rangers solidified their third-place position in the SDAHA Boys’ Varsity standings with a 5-3 league win over fourth-place Oahe on Senior Night at Larson Ice Center on Saturday.

Brookings improved to 11-2-2-0, with 24 points, as the Captials dropped to 10-7 (20 points).

The Rangers close out their season with three home games as they welcome Watertown to LIC on Thursday at 8:15 p.m.; play host to Huron at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday; and then, face Aberdeen at 1:45 p.m. on Sunday.

 Brookings 5, Oahe 3

Brookings used three-power play goals to jump out to a 4-0 lead midway through the second period before the Capitals found the back of the net with 2:33 left in the second.

The Rangers tacked on another power-play tally less than five minutes into the third frame before Oahe scored twice for the final.

Jamison Honkomp opened the scoring with 6:44 on the clock with a power-play goal with the assist going to Austin Lesnar as Brookings led 1-0 after one.

Honkomp made it 2-0 five minutes into the second with another power-play tally as Brenden Way and Mason Gerster picked up the assists.

Less than 90 seconds later, Cody Niklason lit the lamp as Kurt Gutormson and Brandin Heesch set up the goal.

Less than 2 minutes later, Niklason pushed the lead to 4-0 as he converted another power-play opportunity as Carter Shoup and Gutormson earned the helpers.

Spencer Wedin’s goal for the Capitals with 2:33 to play in the second made it 4-1 heading into the final period.

Dominic Dobesh pushed the Rangers’ lead to 5-1 with another power-play conversion less than 5 minutes into the final frame off a Trevor Kuechenmeister setup.

Caden Davis scored back-to-back goals to pull Oahe within 5-3 and that’s where it ended as Brookings finished with 43 shots on goal compared to the Capitals’ 19.

Dylan Geraets and Tristian Hokenson combined for 16 saves in goal as Geraets stopped 11-of-12 shots that he faced in the first two periods while Hokenson collected five saves on seven shots in the third.
