Rangers sweep Thunder on road

RAPID CITY – The Rangers hit the road and swept Rushmore in South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association boys’ action over the weekend, winning 3-2 Saturday and 3-1 Sunday inside the Thunderdome.

The Thunder dropped to 9-5-1-1.

Brookings (12-2-1-0) returns to action playing host to Watertown on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 7:45 p.m. and Huron on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 1:45 p.m.

Saturday

 Brookings 3, Rushmore 2

The Rangers rallied with three goals in the final 10 1/2 minutes – including Ashton Witte’s game-winner with 10 seconds remaining – to beat the Thunder.

Carter Shoup and Max Kjelden assisted on the go-ahead tally.

Shoup got Brookings on the board with a power-play goal with 10:23 to go.

Breck Hirrschoff lit the lamp to knot the score at 2-all with 2:20 left. Carter Merritt was credited with an assist.

Kade Brecher made 24 saves to earn the win between the pipes.

Rushmore’s Derrick Brown Jr. scored early in the second and Miles Retzer found the back of the net on a power play later in the period. Seth Stock had two assists and Kael Delzer added one.

Goalie Abraham Partridge stopped 37 shots.

Sunday

 Brookings 3, Rushmore 1

Hirrschoff scored twice to help the Rangers complete the sweep.

The eighth-grader lit the lamp 7 minutes into the game.

Witte added a goal on an assist from Shoup late in the second.

Hirrschoff’s second unassisted tally gave Brookings a 3-0 cushion with 13:44 remaining in the game.

Goalie Philip Kuechenmeiser made 20 saves to pick up the victory.

The Thunder’s Zeke Farlee scored with 10:38 left. Hunter Walla had an assist.

Brady DeVries stopped 25 shots.
