Rangers top Thunder in OT in state tourney opener

HURON – Montana Myer scored on an assist from Elli Hegdahl 8 minutes, 12 seconds into overtime as the third-seeded Rangers rallied past the sixth-seeded Rushmore Thunder 3-2 to open the South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association Girls’ State Tournament on Friday at Bergman Arena.

Bethany Rennich’s goal with 6:45 remaining in regulation got Brookings on the board.

Jadyn Peterson lit the lamp with 2:32 to go to tie things up at 2-all. Rennich assisted on the equalizer.

Brookings outshot Rushmore 45-13.

Jadyn Runge made 11 saves to earn the win in goal. Madyson Herman stopped 42 shots for Rushmore.

The Thunder grabbed a 1-0 lead on Ella Aase’s goal at the 5:28 mark of the first period. Georgianna Rowland was credited with the assist.

Rowland netted a goal of her own with 7:53 to play in the third as Rushmore moved ahead 2-0.

Brookings takes on the second-seeded Sioux Falls Flyers in the semifinals today at 5 p.m.

• Sioux Falls 9, Oahe 1

Seven different Flyers found the back of the net and Sioux Falls outshot Oahe 70-4 in the quarterfinal victory.

Taylor Dawley and Chloe Harbaugh both finished with two goals and an assist.

Ashley Anderson and Grace Halvorson added one goal and two assists apiece. Kaija Mork notched a goal and an assist.

Berit Hefti and Faith Halvorson also scored. Kaitlyn Vockler and Gabriella Schroder both tallied a pair of helpers.

Sioux Falls led 3-0 after a period and 5-1 through two.

Ava Krabbenhoft made three saves for the Flyers. The Capitals’ Mariah Nelson stopped 61 shots.

Amy Gilkerson scored for Oahe.

• Mitchell 6, Watertown 4

Ashley Jones lit the lamp five times and Ashley Zimmer added a goal and an assist to lead the fourth-seeded Marlins past the fifth-seeded Lakers.

Jones scored twice in a 40-second span early in the third period to put Mitchell ahead 5-3. Jaclyn Lloyd scored on a power play to pull Watertown within 5-4 with 1:34 remaining; however, Zimmer sealed the deal with a goal with 19 seconds to play.

Kelsey Amick added two assists for the Marlins.

Katelyn Uithoven made 27 saves to earn the win. Watertown goalie Sydnie Young had 18 saves.

Jones opened the scoring with two goals in a 9-second span midway through the first period. Tiffany Hamann got Watertown on the board, but Jones scored again to make it 3-1 after a period.

The Lakers’ Kendra Kranz netted a pair of goals in the second to knot the score at 3-3.

• Aberdeen 8, Omaha 0

Seven different players scored at least one goal as the Cougars outshot the Lady Jr. Lancers 71-2.

Hailey Huff earned the shutout win in goal.

Aberdeen built a 5-0 lead after a period and coasted into the semifinals.

Morgan Dean lit the lamp twice. Kensington Eckhoff had a goal and three assists. Rhiannon Abel, Kaitlyn Holland and Kamryn Hayhurst added one goal and one assist apiece.

Reece Ermer and Madyson Ogdahl also found the back of the net.

Estelle Harrison notched two assists.

Omaha’s Jennifer Baulisch made 63 saves.
