Raymond DeJong - Dell Rapids

Raymond DeJong, 76, of Dell Rapids, died  Wednesday,   Nov. 8, 2017, at the Dells Nursing Home. 

Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph the Workman (Huntimer) Catholic Church 46402 245th St.  in Colton. Burial is in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be at Minnehaha Funeral Home, Dell Rapids from 2– 4 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service starting at 4 p.m. 

Ray was born Nov. 29, 1940, in Chester to George and Anna (Bethlehem) DeJong. Ray grew up in the Chester/Colton area and graduated from Colton High School.  Ray married Joan Simonsen on Oct. 22, 1965, and resided in Brookings from 1965 till 2003 until they built their new home in Dell Rapids.  Ray worked at Sioux Valley Energy for 50 years until he retired as the operations manager in 2010.  

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Joan; two daughters,  Ann (Reid) Paulson  of Marshall, Minnesota, and  Kris (Josh) Smith  of Sioux Falls; four grandchildren; sister Frieda Bos of Beresford; sister-in-law Gertrude DeJong of Colton; brothers-in-law Verlyn Rentschler of Egan, Gene Basset of Belle Fourche and Donald (Karen)  Simonson  of Chester and several nieces and nephews.  

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Jake DeJong, Charlie DeJong, George DeJong, Thres Burgers, Dorothy Swier, Susan Bassett, and Anna Rentschler.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Rodney Park Memorial Scholarship (Sioux Valley Energy’s Scholarship program).
