R.C. Post 22 beats Renner 4-3


PIERRE – Rapid City Post 22 topped Renner 4-3 in the winner’s bracket game at the Class A State American Legion Baseball Tournament on Friday night at Hyde Field.

Mitchell dropped Sioux Falls East 4-2 and Brandon Valley beat host Post 8 by a 15-2 margin in five innings in a pair of elimination games earlier in the day.

Renner and Mitchell take the field at 4 p.m. today. Post 22 faces Brandon Valley after that, although the Hard Hats (3-0 in the event) have already secured a spot in the final.

The championship is Sunday at 1 p.m. A second title game will be played an hour after the conclusion of that contest, if necessary.

Matthew Hegre drove in two runs, Ryan Schmidt was 2-for-2 with an RBI triple and two runs scored, and Jack Sorensen also had an RBI for the Hard Hats.

Zach Whitesell gave up three runs – one earned – on seven hits and three walks with two strikeouts in five innings to earn the win. Tad Scherbenske (2/3) and Cooper Bowman (1 1/3) combined for two innings of scoreless relief – the latter picking up the save in the process.

Royals starter Logan Ymker took the loss after surrendering four runs – three earned – on six hits and five walks with three strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.

Nick Hoekstra was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs. Quentin Evers and Trey Rogers both tallied an RBI.
