Ready for kindergarten? Local screenings approach

Posted

BROOKINGS – Parents with young children should take note: Kindergarten screenings for local schools are right around the corner.

The earliest is for the Brookings School District, which has scheduled its kindergarten screening for March 26-28.

To register, a form can be filled out online. The form is accessible from the school district website’s homepage, www.brookings.k12.sd.us. This registration also covers the South Dakota University kindergarten.

Those interested in signing up a child for junior kindergarten must fill out the same form used for kindergarten screening. During the registration and screening process, there will be an opportunity to learn more about junior kindergarten and the selection process for the program.

Local religious schools are also preparing for the next school year and welcoming the next set of kindergarteners.

St. Thomas More Catholic School’s kindergarten screening is also scheduled for March 26-28, with activities for the children to take place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. March 26.

According to St. Thomas More kindergarten teacher Bethann Murphy, activities will include hands-on learning activities and games. It’ll be a chance for the children to be introduced to the school and meet with their teachers and future classmates.

St. Thomas More Catholic School, which is accredited, will offer classes for grades kindergarten and first grade for the 2018-2019 school year.

To register for the screening, call the school at 692-6796 and the secretary, Linda Stewart, should be able to assist with questions and get callers signed up for a preferred time.

The website is www.stmschoolbrookings.weebly.com.

Although Peace Lutheran School doesn’t do kindergarten screening “directly,” they do have an open house planned for April, according to the Rev. Tim Rynearson.

That open house is a time to see the school and what it’s about, with chances to speak with the teacher. It’ll be held from 5:30-7 p.m. April 10.

Parents do not need to sign up or register to attend the open house.

Peace Lutheran School will offer grades K-2 for the 2018-2019 school year, and the open house will be open to parents with children at each of those grade levels.

Anybody with questions about Peace Lutheran School can call the church at 605-697-6624 and ask for Stacy Sahr or check out the school’s website at www.peacebrookings.org/elementary.

To enroll in any of these three schools, children must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2018.
