BROOKINGS – Rain just began to sprinkle upon the crowd of Hillcrest students as they began biking and walking from the Ascension Lutheran parking lot Wednesday morning.
The 105 students walked or biked about a half-mile from the church to Hillcrest’s playground as part of the school’s ongoing commitment to encouraging physical activity among its students. Last year, 94 students participated.
The group was again led by Hillcrest secretary Jan Schallenkamp on her bike, shown above, who did so last year as well. She was among many teachers, supervisors and police officers who also helped escort the students to make sure they stayed together and ensure their safety along the way.
The trek has served as an excellent way to get students excited to be active, third grade teacher Suzy Gehring said. “It promotes healthy choices. … It’s another healthy activity to do.”
