Record-breaking Jackrabbits beat Golden Lions 90-6

BROOKINGS – Ninety.

Yes, ninety.

Third-ranked South Dakota State broke the school record for points and total yards of offense (926) in a game during a 90-6 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the Beef Bowl on Saturday night at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium.

With that said ...

“I’m excited about the win; I’m excited a bunch of young guys got to play,” SDSU coach John Stiegelmeier, who won his 150th career contest, said to open the postgame press conference. “I’m disappointed in how I managed the game. I should have slowed it down earlier in the game; I should’ve taken all passes out; and I should have been more respectful to our opponent. I apologize to Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Coach (Cedric) Thomas.

“I am excited about the young guys that were in there and made plays when given the opportunity, so you have to balance that, and I think I could have been a better head football coach tonight.”

MVP Taryn Christion went 13-of-14 for 332 yards with five touchdowns – all in the first half. The senior quarterback broke the Missouri Valley Football Conference record for career TD tosses with 81.

The Jackrabbits racked up the 926 yards on just 57 plays. They went 6-of-7 on third downs, did not punt and scored on 13 of their 14 possessions – all touchdowns.

Ten different SDSU players found the end zone.

Isaac Wallace picked up 192 yards on five rushes – 38.4 average – and scored twice.

Cade Johnson’s five receptions covered 162 yards as he found paydirt two times. Adam Anderson added four catches for 128 yards with a TD.

Mikey Daniel ran for two touchdowns and Blair Mullholland added one. Blake Kunz, Michael Wandmaker, Pierre Strong, C.J. Wilson and Jacob Brown each had a TD grab.

Backup quarterback Kanin Nelson was 4-of-5 for 136 yards with two touchdowns and third-stringer Justin Roberts ended up 2-of-2 for 89 yards with one scoring toss.

Zy Mosley intercepted a pair of passes.

Stiegelmeier said he thought every available Jackrabbit saw the field in the game.

“In fact, I think we played some true freshmen that never would have played, and they were in there just for warmups really to help the fat guys not have as many hits pregame,” he added. “So that’s a special event in their life.”

And those repetitions are valuable.

“Any time you’re on the field … warming up is a positive, you know, you get some butterflies going and looking around – that’s experience,” Stiegelmeier continued. “So if you get into a game … I think there are a lot of neat stories – Jake Wolfe picking a PAT, and him coming up and thanking me for that opportunity, I mean, that’s pretty cool. So there are a lot of neat things that happened in the game, too.”

The box score pretty much speaks for itself.

Points

The previous school record for points in a game came in SDSU’s 85-0 win over Columbus College in 1922.

SDSU’s 90 points are the second-most in MVFC history – Western Illinois dropped 98 on Cheyney in 2004 – but are the most-ever for a league team versus a Division I opponent.

Taryn Christion

The senior quarterback moved up the career MVFC charts in three categories.

Third to first in passing touchdowns – 81 – passing Ryan Helming, Northern Iowa, 1997-2000 (77) and previous record-holder Matt Brown, Illinois State, 2009-12 (78).

Sixth to third in passing yards – 9,166 – passing Kurt Hess, Youngstown State, 2010-13 (8,926), Eric Sanders, Northern Iowa, 2004-07 (9,012) and Helming (9,089).

11th to ninth in completions – 651 – passing Kevin Glenn, Illinois State, 1997-2000 (645) and Paul Siner, Western Illinois, 1985-88 (646).

Brookings Bobcats

Daniel, a junior, picked up 40 yards on the ground on nine attempts with touchdown runs of 6 yards in the second quarter and 1 yard in the third versus the Golden Lions. He now has 15 career TDs – three this season. Daniel is up to 766 career all-purpose yards, including 637 rushing and 49 receiving.

Sophomore Eddie Miller started at right guard – his second start in a row and 15th appearance in 16 games as a Jackrabbit.

Sophomore linebacker Preston Tetzlaff made his first collegiate tackle and finished the game with three stops in his second career appearance. He also broke up a pass.

Notes

SDSU also broke school records for passing yards (557) and passing touchdowns (eight) in a game. Chase Vinatieri converted a school-record 10 PAT kicks.
