Redhawks top Dolphins for DVC tourney title

Posted

WHITE – Estelline/Hendricks topped Deubrook Area 58-55 in an intense Dakota Valley Conference Girls’ Basketball Tournament title game Saturday night.

“I knew it was going to be tough like this,” said Estelline/Hendricks coach Mike Evert. “We had to handle their full-court pressure, which we did a good job of; and we had to shoot decent, and we did in the second half – in the first quarter we did not. And we couldn’t turn it over a lot against them, and I thought we did a pretty good job there.

“We played well.”

The Redhawks knocked down 11 3-pointers.

Kylie Beare was clutch from the line down the stretch.

She hit a pair of foul shots to put Estelline/Hendricks on top for good at 56-55 with 41.7 seconds remaining. The Redhawks retook possession following a jump ball and Beare added two more freebies with 8.2 seconds to play.

The Dolphins’ desperation heave as time expired rimmed off.

Deubrook led 14-9 after a quarter, 28-27 at halftime and 42-41 through three.

“I thought we were a little flat in the second quarter; I think that was a big difference in it – we weren’t able to get away from them; they kind of hung around and were able to keep it close,” said Deubrook coach Brad DeBeer. “I thought our kids responded when (Estelline/Hendricks) took the lead. We didn’t bury our heads. I mean, it could have gotten crazy there and our kids responded.

“When (Estelline/Hendricks) shoots like they shot tonight, there isn’t a whole lot else we could tell our kids to do besides put a hand in the face – and we did that and they shot right over us. So credit to them for shooting the ball well. I’ve seen them play games where they don’t shoot like that; they did tonight, and that’s a good basketball team that beat us tonight.”

Abby Satterlee and Sophie Johnson had back-to-back buckets to give the Redhawks a 48-44 lead with 5:31 showing on the clock.

Shaylee DeBeer, who scored 11 of her game-high 19 points in the final period, answered with a basket for the Dolphins.

Kaylee Johnson sandwiched treys – she banked the first one in from the top of the key and hit the second from the left wing – around two DeBeer free throws, leaving the score at 54-48 in favor of the visitors with 2:32 left.

DeBeer countered with a traditional 3-point play. She hit two free throws with 1:22 to go and then set up Ashley Vandermeer’s layup with a running one-handed pass as Deubrook moved ahead 55-54 with 50 seconds to play.

Kaylee Johnson hit five 3s and scored 16 points.

Beare, who was 8-of-10 at the foul line, added 15 points. Sophie Johnson scored 13 points and Tasha Vohlken 10.

DeBeer added nine rebounds, five assists, two steals and a block to go with her 19 points.

Baylee Holmlund and Mattie Nepodal both contributed eight points, Andrea Vandermeer had seven, Ashley Vandermeer six and Carley Landmark five. Ashley Vandermeer and Claire Olsen corralled seven boards apiece.

Deubrook Area (10-1) is host to Castlewood today in Toronto. Estelline/Hendricks (11-2), which dropped a 52-45 decision to the Dolphins on Dec. 28 in Toronto, returns to action with a game at Colman-Egan on Friday.
