Region 4B: Hanson, SCW, Ethan, Howard post quarterfinal wins

HURON – Hanson, Sanborn Central/Woonsocket, Ethan and Howard won quarterfinal games in the Region 4B Girls’ Basketball Tournament on Tuesday.

The Beaverettes beat Colman-Egan (8-14) 48-18; the Blackhawks topped Elkton-Lake Benton (12-9) by a 47-22 margin; the Rustlers posted a 65-26 win over Dell Rapids St. Mary (10-12); and the Tigers dropped Chester Area (9-12) 70-60.

The semifinals are Thursday in Huron.

Hanson (18-3) takes on Sanborn Central/Woonsocket (13-8) at 6:30 p.m. and Ethan (19-2) faces Howard (13-8) at 8 p.m.

The semifinal winners advance to the Class B Sweet 16, which is Thursday, March 1.

The Beaverettes built a 16-2 lead after a quarter en route to the quarterfinal win.

They were up 26-8 at halftime and 38-14 through three.

Megan Guericke went 3-for-3 from long range and scored 12 points. Heather Kayser and Jada Campbell added 10 points apiece, and Brooke Weber had nine.

Madison Voelker finished with seven points and seven rebounds for the Hawks, who shot 18.4 percent (7-of-38) from the field.

Tristan Ziebart led a balanced scoring attack with 11 points as the Blackhawks eliminated the Lady Elks.

SCW was up 14-7 after 8 minutes, 25-11 at halftime and 38-15 through three.

Abby Doring finished with eight points and nine rebounds. Madi Moody and Abby Vermuellen added six points apiece, while Megan Poyer and Sarah Morgan both had five. Poyer corralled 12 rebounds.

ELB’s Samantha Schindler totaled seven points, seven boards and three steals. Callie Otkin added five points and Aubrey Wirth four.

The Lady Elks shot 15.2 percent (7-of-46) from the floor.

The Rustlers shot an incredible 65.9 percent (27-of-41) from the field in the win.

Ethan led 16-9 after a quarter, extended the margin to 37-14 at halftime, and took a 54-20 advantage into the fourth.

Karly Gustafson poured in 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting. Cameryn Logan added 18 points, going 6-of-9 from the floor and 6-of-7 at the foul line.

The Cardinals’ Ella Heinitz ended up with 14 points.

 Howard 70, Chester Area 60

Hilary Albrecht totaled 26 points and eight rebounds to lead the Tigers.

Kenedy Koepsell added 17 points and Josie Erickson 10.

Both were efficient from the field – Howard shot 54.5 percent (24-of-44) and Chester ended up at 52.2 percent (24-of-46). The Tigers outscored the Flyers 19-8 at the free-throw line.

Chester’s Makenna Larson scored 16 points and Dakota Alfson added 15.
