Register brings home 2020 SDNA awards

BROOKINGS – The Brookings Register was honored as one of the top small daily newspapers in the state in the 2020 South Dakota Newspaper Association Better Newspapers Contest, bringing home a total of 14 awards.

Contest results were released online last week. The Brookings Register claimed the second-place prize for Best Typography and Design and third place for General Excellence among daily newspapers in the under-7,000 circulation category.

“I’m proud of the work our staff does each day,” Brookings Register Publisher Billy McMacken said. “The awards for our peers are validation of the talent we are fortunate to have in our building.”

Other editorial honors awarded to Register staff in the dailies under-7,000 circulation category were:

• Best feature series, second place, Jodelle Greiner

• Best feature story – profile, second place, Matthew Rhodes

• Best feature story – profile, third place, Jodelle Greiner

• Best headline writing, third place, Doug Kott, among all daily newspapers

• Best photo series, third place, Matthew Rhodes

• Best portrait photo, first place, John Kubal

• Best spot news story, first place, Jodelle Greiner

• Best special section, second place, Register staff, among all dailies

The Register’s art and advertising staff was also honored with four awards, competing against all the state’s daily newspapers. They included:

• Best two-column ad, third place, Nikki Brower and Brian Lankow

• Best series ad idea, first place, Nikki Brower and Tracy Jonas

• Best special publication, second place, Nikki Brower, John Kubal and ad staff

• Best use of color, first place, Nikki Brower and Tracy Jonas
