BROOKINGS – High school girls considering careers in science or engineering can explore those interests at the annual Ready-SET-Go! workshop at South Dakota State University.
Sponsored by the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering, the all-day workshop is Nov. 18 in Crothers Engineering Hall. It features three hands-on sessions and a talk from two women from the National Association of Women in Construction: Gaila Schreurs, operations manager for HVAC Elements in Sioux Falls, and Amy Sorlien-Lee, estimator and business development manager at Sorlien Electric, Tea.
In the construction management session, students will become project managers. They will create a building materials list, a cost estimate and a construction schedule.
In the mathematics session, students will investigate the theory of Markov chains and their application in predicting behavior and managing transportation as well as internet and power girds. The chains are a system that calculates probabilities in which future actions are not dependent upon the steps that led to the present state.
In the mechanical design session, students will test the load on wings from radio-controlled planes. Small sandbags will be loaded onto standard foam wings and those covered with a layer of aluminum. Students will measure deflection, find the breaking point and compare the gain in load strength versus the increased weight of the wings.
In addition to the sessions for high school girls, there are three free sessions for parents and teachers. The first session is “Preparing Your Student for College and STEM Career Opportunities.” The second session is a panel presentation by SDSU students and industry professionals discussing their academic and professional experiences. The final session is a walking tour of some of the Lohr College of Engineering’s laboratories.
The day begins with registration at 9 a.m. and closes by 4:50 p.m.
The three hands-on sessions, lunch and SDSU ice cream for a mid-afternoon treat are all covered in the registration $25 fee ($35 after Nov. 11).
