RENNER – Two of Corey Vasquez’s four RBIs came on a home run and Kris Regas tossed a four-hitter as the Monarchs completed a regular-season sweep of the Cubs with a 13-1, seven-inning victory during Sioux Empire League amateur baseball action Thursday night at Renner Ballpark.
Renner scored two runs in the first inning and Vasquez’s long ball highlighted the home team’s four-run second, which made it 6-1. The Monarchs added three runs in the fifth, including a two-run single by Vasquez.
Tim Huber went deep to lead off the sixth, pushing the margin to 10-1. Nate Hewes scored on a wild pitch, Matt Zimmer was hit by a pitch to force in a run and David Borchardt drew a walk to plate another and provide for the final margin.
Regas struck out nine batters and walked one.
Chaz Palmer was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs.
Brookings’ Sam McMacken, who finished 2-for-2 with a walk, hit a homer to center field in the second inning.
Kyle Krogman allowed seven runs – six earned – on six hits and five walks with a pair of strikeouts in four-plus innings.
The Cubs (14-6, 3-4) take on the Sioux Falls Flying Squirrels on Sunday at 5 p.m. at Harmodon. The district tournament is next week in Brookings.
