Renner tops Bombers Black 13-3; Watertown moves to 2-0

BROOKINGS – Renner topped the Bombers Black 13-3 in six innings and the Watertown Black Sox dropped Sioux Falls West 3-2 on Thursday at Bob Shelden Field to remain unbeaten in the Class A 14U State Baseball Tournament.

Mitchell beat Brandon Valley 14-4 in six innings and Pierre defeated Sioux Falls East 8-2 in losers’ bracket action.

Pierre faces Sioux Falls West at 10 a.m. and Brookings takes on Mitchell at 1 p.m. today in elimination games.

Watertown and Renner square off at 4 p.m.

• Renner 13, Brookings 3 (6 inn.)

Teegan Schlimgen homered and Reece Arbogast pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief as the Barons pulled away from a 3-all game with 10 consecutive runs to secure the victory.

Arbogast surrendered just two hits and struck out five of the 12 batters he faced.

Dalton Garbers went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs. Andy Moen was also 3-for-3 and scored four times. Arbogast ended up 3-for-4 and Harry Hueners finished 2-for-3.

Zach Ridl was hit by a pitch to open the bottom of the first frame. Following a fielder’s choice, Arbogast singled and Moen walked to load the bases.

Schlimgen also drew a base on balls to force in Aspen Dahl and chase Brookings starter Kyle Bauer.

Garbers rolled the next pitch into right-center field for a two-run single to make it 3-0.

The Bombers Black got all three runs back in the top of the third.

With one out, Henry Hammrich was hit by a pitch and Jackson Krogman walked.

Cole Mahlum’s sacrifice fly got Brookings on the board. Maxwell Kjelden then walked.

Jamison Honkomp ripped a two-run double with two away to knot the score at 3-all.

Arbogast took over on the mound following Honkomp’s big hit.

In the bottom of the third, Moen singled with one out and Schlimgen reached on an error. Garbers’ RBI double put the Barons on top for good at 4-3.

Hueners singled to load the bases. Brookings got a force out at home, but a throwing error to first allowed two more runs to score as Renner moved ahead 6-3.

In the fourth, Dahl walked and Arbogast singled with one away. Moen followed with an RBI single and courtesy runner Andrew Barr stole home.

That’s when Schlimgen stepped to the plate, as the catcher lined a pitch over the wall in left for a two-run homer that made it 10-3.

Renner scored three more times in the sixth, including a sacrifice fly by TJ Free that ended the game via the 10-run rule.

Kjelden went 2-for-2 with a walk for Brookings. Bauer doubled and Mason Bebensee singled.

Bebensee took the loss in relief, surrendering seven runs – five earned – on nine hits with three strikeouts and a walk in 3 2/3 innings.

• Watertown 3, Sioux Falls West 2

Lexas Thorson gave up two runs – one earned – on four hits and three walks with five strikeouts in a complete-game performance as Watertown moved to 2-0.

Watertown’s Nate Lear had a one-out double in the bottom of the third, advanced on Mason Stoick’s single and scored on Dawson Schmidt’s sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.

Parker Reed walked with one away in the fourth before consecutive singles by Lexan Thorson, Braxton Lacher and Zach Hirsch pushed the margin to 2-0.

Stoick reached on an error and Schmidt was hit by a pitch in the fifth. Mason Evens came through with a two-out RBI single to put Watertown on top 3-0.

Sioux Falls West’s Billy Chatwell opened the sixth with a single. Dylan Ades singled with one out and Matt Peters walked to load the bases.

Gabe Stahl reached on an error in the outfield, as Chatwell and Ades scored to cut the deficit to 3-2. Stahl was credited with a pair of RBIs.

Lacher finished 2-for-3 for Watertown.

Sioux Falls West’s Ethan Behrend doubled twice in three at-bats.

Ades took the loss after giving up three runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and a walk in six innings.

Losers’ bracket

• Mitchell 14, Brandon Valley 4 (6 inn.)

Evan Demaranville hit an inside-the-park home run while finishing with a pair of RBIs and Masen Thompson pitched five quality innings as Mitchell eliminated Brandon Valley.

Thompson gave up four runs – none earned – on four hits and five walks in five innings. He had one strikeout.

Ty Neugebauer finished 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored.

Thompson had a single, two RBIs and three runs. Tucker Vilhauer had a double and two RBIs. Evan Demaranville added a single and two RBIs. Tate Ellwein and Parker Bollinger contributed an RBI apiece.

Ellwein pitched a hitless sixth to seal the deal.

Mitchell scored three runs in the second, four in the third and five in the fourth to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 12-1 advantage.

Brandon Valley’s Mason Stark had an RBI double. Dawson Skorczewski also drove in a run.

Maxwell Kane allowed seven runs – five earned – on four hits and five walks with two strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings in the loss.

Isaac Polak tossed a four-hitter and was one of three Pierre players to drive in a pair of runs in the elimination game.

He struck out two batters and walked two, throwing 70 pitches.

Polak finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs at the plate.

Jake Mayer and Bennett Dean both had one hit and two RBIs.

Zach Letellier totaled two hits and tallied the team’s other RBI.

Pierre scored single runs in the third and fifth frames, before moving ahead 6-0 following a four-run sixth.

Sioux Falls East’s Braiden Heiden had an RBI double and Carson Strom added a triple.

Heiden took the loss despite allowing just two runs on four hits with eight strikeouts and two walks over five innings.
