Rerouting park road

BROOKINGS – Part of a road in the southwest corner of Pioneer Park is undergoing some construction, said Russ Halgerson, electric department manager for Brookings Municipal Utilities. About 100 yards of asphalt have been ripped up from Western Avenue toward the east. The road will be closed for three to four weeks as Bowes Construction does the work.

Halgerson said the park is still open as normal, but traffic will take a small detour. Instead of driving straight out to Western on the asphalt road, drivers will be directed right to a gravel road that goes north, then curves to the west to connect with Western Avenue. Halgerson said they can drive on a small corner of grass to access the gravel road.

“We’re re-routing the road to allow us to construct a sub-station. We’re calling it the Western Avenue sub-station,” Halgerson said.
