Richard Oppelt, 91, of Brookings, formerly of Elkton, South Dakota, passed away on Saturday, May 23, 2020, at the United Living Community.  Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 28, 2020, at the United Parish of Elkton at 10:30 a.m.  Burial will immediately follow the service at the Elkton City Cemetery.  Due to the current social climate and social distancing efforts with COVID-19, the funeral will be limited to family only.  A time of visitation will be held the day prior, Wednsday, May 27, 2020, also at the United Parish in Elkton from 12:00 until 7:00 p.m. so that Richard’s friends may pay their respects.  Eidsness Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.

Richard Herman Oppelt was born on April 19, 1929, in Brookings County, South Dakota, the son of Herman and Martha (Fischer) Oppelt. 

Dick received his education in rural school in Brookings County, South Dakota.  He was united in marriage to Margaret “Marge” Bird on Sept. 17, 1950, in Elkton, South Dakota.  Together they farmed their entire lives near Elkton.  Marge died on Oct. 23, 2007, in Brookings, South Dakota. 

Dick was a member of the United Parish of Elkton for a number of years.  In addition to farming, Dick enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Survivors include his nephews Myron (Carole) Scharkey and Wayne Banick; niece June Nelson; and several extended family members and friends.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marge; brother, Lester Oppelt; and two half-brothers, Melvin Banick and Hugo Scharkey.
