The Rev. Robert E. Camp, 93, of Vail, Arizona, formerly of Brookings, died Wednesday, June 27, 2018, at the VA Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona.
Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Saturday at Brookings First Assembly of God Church in Brookings. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.
Robert E. Camp was born on July 29, 1924 in Blair, Nebraska, the son of Leonard and Esther (McCance) Camp. Robert received his education in Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota and Washington state. He graduated from Chelan High School when he returned from the Army. He graduated from Open Bible Institute in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1949. He was ordained in 1952 and received his bachelor of theology degree from Minnesota Bible University in Minneapolis, Minnestoa. He attended the University of Munich, Germany (Army School), Cincinnati Bible Seminary, in Cincinnati and South Dakota State University in Brookings.
He served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946 during World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star with bronze oak leaf, Combat Infantry Badge, the European Theater with three combat stars, European Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the French Medal of Honor. He was a Boy Scout and was a Scout master and was a chaplain for the CAP in California. He was also the South Dakota Dept. DAV Chaplain for 27 years.
Robert married Violet Prussman on June 25, 1947, in Brookings. He served as pastor with his wife in Iowa, Nebraska and Southern California. He taught in California Open Bible Institute, in Pasadena and in Dayton Bible Institute in Dayton, Ohio. He returned to South Dakota in 1965. He then served as lay minister and interim pastor for several different churches in South Dakota. From 1965 to 1975, he drove school bus for the Brookings School District. From 1967 to 1987 he was employed as a police officer for SDSU. He also helped organize the SDSU student patrol. He loved God and country.
He was a member of the Assembly of God Church, a Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was past dept. chaplain, chapter chaplain and commander. He was also a life member of the South Dakota State Employee’s Organization.
Robert is survived by a son, Robin Camp of Vail, Arizona; a daughter, Ruth Lynelle Clark of Palm Coast, Florida; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Milton Camp of Sonora, California, and a sister Mildred Angello of Carmel, California.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Violet, a daughter, Rebecca, a brother, Harold and three sisters, Bonnie, Margaret and Lois.
