BROOKINGS – Sioux Falls Roosevelt defeated Brookings 4-0 to open the girls’ soccer season on a hot Saturday afternoon at Fishback Soccer Park.

“We ran out of gas; but, I thought the things we worked on in practice, we were doing. But once we got tired, it was just difficult for us to fight back,” said Kelli Herman, who was making her debut as Brookings’ head coach.

The Rough Riders grabbed the lead early on Macie Haggerty’s goal in the second minute. Megan Pump added to the margin in the 34th minute.

Hattie Giblin found the back of the net in the 54th minute and Taiya Jorgenson added a goal in the 76th minute to provide for the final margin.

Roosevelt’s Caitlin Schneider made four saves in 78 minutes of action. Orion Stadlman took over after that to help complete the shutout.

Brookings’ Grace Mork made 10 saves.

Despite the loss, Herman found positives in her team’s performance.

“I think the formation we’re working with is coming together,” the former South Dakota State standout said. “Once again, this is our first game and we’re not quite in game shape; once we get into game shape, the way we play is going to be hard for other teams to defend.”

The Bobcats head to Watertown to face the Arrows on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
