BROOKINGS – Nate Rotert and Seth Gross both posted pins as 19th-ranked South Dakota State beat Utah Valley 29-10 in a Big 12 Conference wrestling dual Saturday night at Frost Arena.

The Jackrabbits won seven of the 10 bouts, getting bonus points in four of them.

“I don’t think we wrestled our best, but they come out and they cling to you; it’s hard,” said SDSU head coach Chris Bono. “They do a good job of slowing the match down. I think we could have done a better job separating ourselves; but give them credit, they slowed us down and made us kind of look bad.”

Luke Zilverberg opened the dual with a 12-4 major decision against Koy Wilkinson at 165 pounds to give the Jackrabbits an early 4-0 lead in the dual.

The Wolverines’ Kimball Bastian upended No. 13 David Kocer 3-1 in extra time in the 174-pound bout.

SDSU’s Martin Mueller followed with a 7-4 win over Will Sumner at 184.

At 197, the seventh-ranked Rotert won by fall in 2:38 versus Tanner Orndorff. He led 6-2 at the time of the pin.

Rotert upped his season record to 18-3 (11-2 duals).

UVU’s Dustin Dennison edged Alex Macki 6-5 in the heavyweight match, leaving the dual score at 13-6.

The Jackrabbits’ Ben Gillette tallied a takedown in the final 5 seconds to beat Mitchell Brown 7-6 in the 125-pound matchup.

And then came Gross, who earned 10 back points while opening up a 14-1 advantage in the opening period against Jarod Maynes at 133.

Gross, who’s ranked second nationally, chose the top position to open the second and eventually finished off the bout with a pin in 4:28.

The sophomore is now 23-1 (13-0 duals) this year. He’s earned bonus points in 21 of his 23 wins, including 10 pins.

UVU’s Trevor Wilson earned a 14-5 major decision over Isaac Andrade in the 141-pound match.

SDSU won the final two bouts.

Alex Kocer just missed a major decision with a 9-2 defeat of Grant LaMont at 149. Logan Peterson picked up bonus points via a 12-4 major decision over Raider Lofthouse at 157.

Utah Valley, which beat No. 23 North Dakota State 22-16 on Friday in Fargo, fell to 5-4 (2-2).

The Jackrabbits, coming off a 20-19 win over No. 15 Oklahoma the night before, improved to 12-3 (6-1)

South Dakota State has a tough road trip ahead, taking on Big 12 foe West Virginia on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Morgantown before facing fifth-ranked Virginia Tech in a nonconference dual Sunday at 11:30 a.m. in Blacksburg.
