Rough Riders drop Bobcats 5-2

BROOKINGS – Sioux Falls Roosevelt dropped the Bobcats 5-2 in season-opening boys’ soccer action on a steamy Saturday afternoon at Fishback Soccer Park.

“We learned a lot about what our team is going to be this year,” said BHS coach Steve Binkley. “We started off with a game against a really tough team and I think we knew that they were going to be some of our best competition this year. They are a team that brought back most of its players, and we started and played a lot of guys that are new to the varsity team.

“But we played really well; stuck through the whole game. So we learned a lot about our team. I think we’ll be a tough team all season long. We put in two really good goals and had a lot of chances. A lot of the goals we let in we could chalk up to that ‘beginning of the season’ sort of thing – communication things and little errors on our part that a lot of our seniors aren’t worried about and we know that we’ll clean it up. By the end of the season, we’re just not going to make those mistakes.

“It’s a lot of that ‘early of the year’ stuff that we know we’ll get fixed; so we’re not too worried about the ‘W’ or the ‘L’ at the beginning of the season, but just learning from the game experience and getting a lot of these young guys that 80 minutes of really fast play.”

The Rough Riders’ Suad Smajlovic opened the scoring on an assist from Brady Cork in the 15th minute.

Joel Sathyanesan pushed the margin to 2-0 with an unassisted tally 5 minutes later.

Mike Kindvall scored Brookings’ first goal of the year soon thereafter, finding the back of the net in the 28th minute. Schafer Vestal was credited with the assist.

Roosevelt grabbed a 3-1 advantage 7 minutes before intermission as Giancarlo Barillas set up Mason Stolle for a goal.

The Rough Riders struck first in the second half as Titan Martin scored in the 51st minute, putting the visitors ahead 4-1.

Brookings’ Daniyll Potapenko scored a goal in the 65th minute. Keegan Fields assisted.

Sathyanesan provided for the final margin with a goal in the 75th minute.

Ryan Lounsbery earned the win in goal, making four saves.

Brookings’ Zander Larson stopped five shots in the first half and Jake Weber made five saves in the second.

“I think we looked good,” Binkley added. “We’re excited about Tuesday, the game against Watertown and our first ESD matchup. I think we look really strong in the ESD and we’re just looking forward to that conference matchup.”

The Bobcats and Arrows face off Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Watertown.
