Rough Riders, Lynx win Brookings Invitational titles

BROOKINGS – The Sioux Falls Roosevelt cheer team and Brandon Valley dance squad picked up victories in the Brookings Invitational on Saturday at Bob Jostad Gymnasium.

The Rough Riders posted a score of 282 to edge O’Gorman (278).

Sioux Falls Washington (253.5) was third and Sioux Valley finished fourth at 250.5.

“We didn’t have our typical performance on the floor today,” said Cossack coach Casie King. “I felt like we were distracted all week and it showed today.

“We had some silly errors and made mistakes that were frustrating to the team as a whole. In a 2 1/2-minute routine, we probably had about 10 bad seconds; but when your team strives for perfection it is hard not to focus on those 10 seconds.

“That is also what makes our team successful throughout the year. I know the Cossacks will refocus this week and come back stronger than ever.

“Even though a fourth-place finish isn’t a terrible placing, we know we can do better. We look to correct the errors that were made today and have a flawless routine Thursday at our home meet.”

That meet is at 6 p.m. in Volga.

Harrisburg (247) ended up fifth.

The host Bobcats were sixth at 239.

“Brookings cheer had a good first competition of the season,” said BHS coach Becca Rounds. “We had a 10-point safety deduction that we will fix for Huron on Tuesday.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to compete and will continue working hard to increase our score and placement throughout the season.

“We feel blessed we could recognize our seniors – Trinity Kindt, Jenna Schoon, Kolbey Weier and Lily Siemonsma – at our home competition.

“Any time we can practice and compete together as a team is a good day!”

In dance, Brandon Valley ran away with a 383.5 tally while Sioux Falls Washington was runner-up at 347.25.

Brookings ended up 13th at 278.5 – 283.5 pom and 273.5 hip-hop.

“Brookings dance continues to make strides of improvement every practice and competition,” said BHS coach Brianna Vig. “I am beyond thrilled with their performances today and am eager to see how much this team continues to advance.

“We made some minor choreography changes earlier in the week and everyone truly embraced the challenge.

“Our home competition is always special, as we recognize the hard-working senior athletes, too. This year we are a very young team but take pride in the leadership that Arianna Myers and Lily Siemonsma bring to the table.

“Go Bobcats!”
