The South Dakota Rushmores won two of their first three games to open the Roy Hobbs World Series, beating Team America 17-2 on Monday after falling 6-2 to the San Diego Padres and defeating the Kent Mudhens 14-4 on Sunday.
They face the Maine Woods on Tuesday morning.
Monday
The Rushmores scored five runs in the top of the first and added an eight-spot in the third to take control early.
Lew Ingalls, Kent Rolfing, Paul Smith and Ev Bradshaw each had two of the team’s 15 hits. Doug Stormo (bases-loaded triple), Mike Spratt, Jeff Blatt, Harvey Austin, Phil Trooien, Al West and Johnson Larson added a hit apiece.
Bob Bartlett pitched a four-hitter, striking out one without issuing a walk.
Sunday
Blatt, Spratt and Ingalls each collected four hits in the doubleheader. Austin contributed three hits and Rolfing and Bartlett both tallied a pair.
Lee Goldammer and Jerry Barsky both pitched three innings versus the Padres. Phil Clements threw the first three against the Mudhens and Ingalls tossed the final four.
