Sackreiter: Advocate for equity, families

BROOKINGS – Having learned from his run for school board last year, Kevin Sackreiter is ready to run again to advocate for equity and all families in the Brookings School District.

The director of the South Dakota State University’s Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning, Sackreiter is running for the one school board spot open this cycle, currently held by Larry Rogers, who has not filed for reelection. Sackreiter is running for the three-year term against Jennifer Lacher-Starace.

The school board election – along with the city council and mayoral race – will be held April 11.

“I really care about making sure there’s a voice for all families in the school district, on the school board, one that really looks at decision making through an equity perspective, making sure that all decisions benefit all the families in the school district. That’s probably my biggest priority,” he said. “I can be that voice for families that maybe don’t feel like they have a voice.”

After listening to encouragement from others, he’s ready for another race. If he is successful, he sees it as a great chance to have an impact on the community.

“I think that’s why I want to do something: It has an impact, and I see this would really have an impact on kids, on families in Brookings,” he said. “My family and I really love the Brookings community. We love the school system. Our kids thoroughly enjoy being in the school system, so being able to have a small part in shaping what that school system looks like is really important.”

His own children are at the start of their academic lives, with one second-grader attending Dakota Prairie and a preschooler who will join junior kindergarten next year.

Having young children just starting out in school, he said, would also lend him another valuable perspective.
