BROOKINGS – Safety Town continues to be an important safety program and outreach for the Police Department, and this week is the time to start signing up.

Both young participants and teenage volunteers are needed.

Safety Town is a general program designed for preschoolers and children who have just entered school. Safety Town is conducted over a two-month period and serves approximately 240 children. It operates under the budget of traffic safety and the City of Brookings.

Safety Town officers spend two hours a day with each class in the areas of traffic safety, stranger danger and fire safety. The program provides not only a good learning experience for children, but offers a positive relationship with law enforcement.

Three sessions planned for this year include:

• June 5 – June 16

• June 19 – June 30

• July 10 – July 21

Sessions are two weeks long, 10 a.m. to noon or 1-3 p.m. Monday through Friday and cost $20. Children must be 4-6 years old and must have reached the age of 4 by Dec. 31, 2016. Information at Safety Town is presented by local professionals from Brookings Police Department, Brookings Fire Department, Brookings Ambulance, and many more.

Registration will begin on Tuesday, April 4. All registrations are handled online through the Parks & Recreation online registration: https://apm.activecommunities.com/cityofbrookings/.

Space is limited to 40 children per session. Registration will continue until all slots are filled. If all slots are filled, a child can be placed on a waiting list and no payment is required at that time. To do so, contact Chris Larson at the Brookings Police Department, 692-2113.

The Police Department is looking for teen instructor volunteers between the ages of 11-14 years old. Under the guidance of a police officer and teacher, a teen instructor will be responsible for teaching vital safety lessons to 4-, 5- and 6-year-olds and help the children practice safety rules on the outdoor Safety Town course.

Volunteer registration begins April 3. Contact Larson at the police department at 692-2113.
