Sanborn Central/Woonsocket pulls off upset of New Underwood in Class B

HURON – Top-seeded Warner, fifth-seeded Sanborn Central/Woonsocket, second-seeded and defending champion Sully Buttes, and third-seeded Ethan opened the Class B State Girls’ Basketball Tournament with quarterfinal victories on Thursday at Huron Arena.

• Warner 65, Timber Lake 39

• Sanborn Central/Woonsocket 66, New Underwood 59

• Sully Buttes 63, Parker 45

• Ethan 56, Avon 43

In today’s semifinal action, the Monarchs (22-2) face the Blackhawks (23-1) at 6 p.m. and the Chargers (23-1) take on the Rustlers (23-1) at 7:45 p.m.

The Panthers (19-4) take on the Tigers (22-2) at noon and the Pheasants (20-4) face the Lady Pirates (21-3) at 1:45 p.m. in the consolation semifinals.

In the first matchup this season, SCW beat Warner 55-43 on Jan. 7 in the State Farm Holiday Classic in Redfield.

Ethan defeated Sully Buttes 59-53 in overtime during the Parkston Classic on Dec. 30.

Warner (2013, 2014), Ethan and Sully Buttes have combined to win the past four state championships.

The Chargers beat the Rustlers 33-25 in the 2016 final, while the Rustlers toppled the Chargers 31-28 in the 2015 championship game.

• Warner 65, Timber Lake 39

Laurie Rogers posted a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Monarchs.

Warner led 20-10 after a quarter, 35-24 at halftime and 49-33 through three.

Haylee Hanson had 14 points and five boards.

Alexis Boesl contributed eight points, Sydney Leidholt seven, Makala Hauge six, and Reilly Fuhrman and Ashley Fischbach four apiece. Hauge, who grabbed six rebounds, and Boesl both dished out four assists, and Leidholt had three steals.

The Monarchs shot 45.8 percent (22-of-48) from the field, including 7-of-15 on 3-pointers. The Panthers shot 27.8 percent (15-of-54), making only two of their 23 attempts from long range.

Chyanne Ducheneaux had 11 points for Timber Lake. Sydney Maher and Loryn Schoelerman added eight points apiece.

Notes: Warner’s other defeat this year was a 54-24 setback to the Chargers on Jan. 28 in Onida.

• Sanborn Central/Woonsocket 66, New Underwood 59

South Dakota State commit Myah Selland had another standout performance to lead the Blackhawks.

The 6-foot-1 senior scored 30 points, going 11-of-23 from the field and 7-of-10 at the foul line. She also tallied eight rebounds, seven assists, five steals and three blocks.

New Underwood was up 11-8 after a quarter, but SCW used a 29-point second quarter to move ahead 37-25 at halftime.

The Tigers pulled within 46-42 through three and narrowed the deficit to one point – 46-45 – via Jaedyn Finkbeiner’s trey with 7:45 remaining in the game.

Selland answered with a bucket in the paint with 7:20 to go and Abby Doering added a free throw soon thereafter. Selland then came up with a steal and set up an easy bucket for Kayla Olson with 6:09 left. Doering again went 1-of-2 at the line, before another Selland basket capped an 8-0 run to make it 54-45 with 4:33 left.

Later, the Tigers used a 5-0 spurt to cut the margin to two points – 56-54 – with 2:04 showing on the clock.

Olson made it a two-possession game with a pair of charity tosses with 2:01 to play. Selland added a pair of foul shots with 53 seconds left and Olson made two more with 34 seconds remaining to make it 62-54 and essentially seal the deal.

SCW shot 38.2 percent (21-of-55) and committed 14 turnovers. New Underwood ended up at 36 percent (18-of-50) and turned the ball over 20 times.

Olson added 11 points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists for the Blackhawks. Tristan Ziebard also had 11 points, while Doering and Megan Poyer added six apiece. Maddie Vermeulen had the team’s other bucket.

New Underwood’s Brianna Phillipsen, a 6-1 senior, posted a double-double of 18 points and 12 boards to go with four assists, two blocks and a steal.

Lexi Ballard had 16 points and six steals, but turned the ball over seven times. Jaedyn Finkbeiner contributed 11 points and eight boards.

Notes: Sanborn Central/Woonsocket’s only loss this season was a 62-29 setback to Ethan on Jan. 30 in Forestburg.

• Sully Buttes 63, Parker 45

Racquel Wientjes (24) and Chloe Lamb (20) combined to score 44 points on 15-of-27 shooting as the Chargers posted the opening win.

Rachel Guthmiller added 11 points.

Parker was on top 17-16 after a quarter, but Sully Buttes went on top 29-22 at halftime and was ahead 45-34 through three.

Sully Buttes shot 51.3 percent from the field, including 5-of-9 from 3-point range, and went 18-of-20 while committing just four turnovers.

Parker got 13 points from Grace Leberman and 10 by Lauren Hunstad. They went a combined 9-of-17 from the field.

• Ethan 56, Avon 43

Four Rustlers reached double figures in points as the defending champs rolled.

Rachel Hawkins and Ellie Hohn had 14 points apiece, Kacey Bartscher 12 and Karly Gustafson 10. Ellie Hohn came up with five steals.

Ethan shot 50 percent (17-of-34) from the field and had 10 turnovers.

The Rustlers were up 17-8 after a quarter, 31-26 at halftime and 46-35.

Avon ended up at 44.4 percent (16-of-36) with 18 giveaways.

Lauren Sees had 15 points and nine boards. Hanna Powers added 12 points and Cheylee Nagel 10.

Notes: Ethan’s lone loss this season was a 53-51 setback to Class A No. 1 St. Thomas More in the Hanson Classic on Jan. 14 at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.
