Scavenger hunt for new residents Sept. 17

BROOKINGS – The Brookings newcomer program, Beyond Connections, will host a Fall Scavenger Hunt from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17.

The goal of this event is to welcome residents in a fun way while providing them the opportunity to learn more about their new community.

Participants will start at Café Coteau in the Children’s Museum of South Dakota, where they will receive a list of clues to guide them to various attraction and retail locations throughout Brookings. They are asked to take a photo of themselves in front of each clue location, and the first group to correctly complete all of the clues will win a prize.

This is the second city-wide scavenger hunt that Beyond Connections has hosted this year.

“We received a lot of positive feedback from our summer scavenger hunt where we had 40 participants,” said Stacy Aesoph, Brookings Economic Development Corporation director of workforce development and organizer of the scavenger hunt. “Many of them asked us to do another scavenger hunt in the fall to welcome more new residents.”

"My kids and I had a fantastic time doing the scavenger hunt. We learned so much about our town that we didn't know and had fun getting to know its newest residents as well,” said Amy Aylor, summer scavenger hunt winner. “We would absolutely do this again and are proud to live in a community with such thoughtful programs."

All Brookings residents are encouraged to participate in the Fall Scavenger Hunt. Groups or individuals should RSVP to Aesoph at stacy@brookingsedc.com or 605-697-8103. Additional events planned for new residents include a Welcome Social at Wooden Legs Brewing Company from 4-6 p.m. Oct. 20 and the Mayor’s Holiday Party on Dec. 7.

Beyond Connections is a workforce development program of BEDC created to bring people together to welcome new residents, network and build relationships.
