School records fall in SDSU Holiday Classic

BROOKINGS – A pair of school records fell during the season-opening SDSU Holiday Classic on Friday and Saturday at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex.

Sophomore Dominick Etherington heaved the shot put 59 feet, 0.25 inches to top the previous indoor mark of 57-0.5 (John Delay, 1997) in the event. He placed third.

Trent Francom, a junior from Huron, cleared 17-0.75 in the pole vault to top his own mark of 17 feet set last year. He placed second.

Sam Zenner won the men’s 200-meter dash in 21.6 seconds and was runner-up in the 60 with a 6.87 clocking.

Oksana Covey placed first in the women’s 800 in 2:14.07.

Caleb Bray won the 300-meter dash in 34.59 – the second-fast time in school history (Jeff Tiefenthaler, 33.96 in 1985).

On Saturday, Noah Huber (167-3) and Alexis Schmidt (151-7 1/4) were both second in the discus.

Evan Hieber took second in the heptathlon with a career-best score of 5,138 – the second-highest total in the Jackrabbit annals.

Minnesota took the men’s team title with 161 points, South Dakota State (155) was second and South Dakota (135.5) third.

In the women’s standings, USD (193), UM (188.5) and SDSU (93.4285) went 1-2-3.

The Jackrabbits are host to North Dakota in a dual Saturday, Jan. 18, at 2 p.m.
