Schoon, Miller win at Farrand

BROOKINGS – Jacob Schoon and Gus Miller both won three matches en route to claiming individual championships at Saturday’s Floyd Farrand Invitational held at Sioux Falls Lincoln as the Bobcats scored 112.5 points to finish sixth as a team.

Watertown won the team title with 208.5 points, followed by Sturgis with 188.

Schoon wrestled a total of 5 minutes and 58 seconds to earn his victories as the undefeated senior won by fall in all three bouts. After a first-round bye, Schoon pinned Brock Schroeder of Lennox in 2:21; stuck Brandon Valley’s Dominic Tucker in 1:08; and won the 182-pound title with a win by fall in 2:29 over the Arrows’ Jayden Hartford in the title tilt.

Miller had to go the distance in the 220-pound championship match as he won a 5-2 decision over Evan Hehr of Spearfish, 5-2. After a first-round bye, Miller pinned Watertown’s Mac Freidel in 3:30 in the quarterfinals before winning by fall in 1:25 over Clayton Smith of Sturgis in the semis.

Connor Klinkhammer placed third at 120 pounds with a 3-1 mark. After a first-round bye, Klinkhammer stuck Harrisburg’s Jagger Gribble in 34 seconds, but dropped a 2-1 decision to Jacob Wood of Sturgis in the semifinals. He then pinned Sioux Falls Washington’s Asher Eidem in 19 seconds before winning by forfeit over Lance Soukup of Wagner in the third-place match.

Logan Bowes finished fourth at 160 pounds with a 3-2 record. Bowes won by fall in 1:08 over Garretson’s Parker Schlenker and then, posted a 10-3 decision over the Arrows’ Lexan Thorson. Bowes lost a 3-2 decision to Wren Jacobs of Sturgis in the semifinals before bouncing back with a 7-4 win over Harrisburg’s Mason Schoenhard in the wrestlebacks. He then dropped a 7-3 decision to Brandon Valley’s Damion Schunke in the third-place match.

The Bobcats had one wrestler finish sixth – Tucker Christie at 285; two wrestlers place seventh – Nolan Archer at 126 and Jaxon Bowes at 138; to go along with an eight-place finisher – Koby Bartels at 132.

Christie received a first-round bye, and then, won by fall in 1:29 over Washington’s Todar Petrovic. Christie lost by fall in 1:52 to Wagner’s Dawson Lensing in the semifinals, and then, forfeited his final two matches due to injury.

Archer received a first-round bye before dropping a 7-6 decision to Vermillion’s Jarrett Rueb in the quarterfinals. Archer won by fall in 2:41 over Logan Desersa of Sturgis, but lost a 5-3 overtime decision to Mason Stoick of Watertown. In the seventh-place match, Archer posted a 7-2 decision over Roosevelt’s Eli Leonhardt.

Bowes lost by fall in his opener in 52 second to Jaetin DeCou of Lennox; received a first-round consolation bye; and then, won a 6-3 decision over Perry Ketelsen of Sturgis. Bowes lost a 15-3 major decision to Watertown’s Mac Young in the consolation semis before winning a 3-1 decision over Harrisburg’s Ryan Hirschkorn in the seventh-place match.

Bartels opened with a 13-0 major decision over Garretson’s Isaiah Robinson, but lost by fall in 3:17 to Riley Williams of Lennox. In the wrestlebacks, Bartels won by technical fall (19-4) in 4:38 over Zaven Osborne of Sturgis before losing by fall in 42 seconds to Harrisburg’s Max Johnson. In the seventh-place match, Bartels dropped a 6-2 decision to Roosevelts’ Dan Momotic.
