Schoon, Miller win; Bobcats place third at Les Tlustos Invitational

BROOKINGS – The Bobcats crowned two individual champions and had seven other place-winners in powering to 180.5 points for a third-place finish at their own Les Tlustos Invitational on Saturday at BHS.

Pierre won the team title with 257 points, followed by Rapid City Central with 228.5 for second.

Jacob Schoon (170) and Eddie Miller (285) corralled individual crowns while Kesmond Willert (152) finished second; Cole Eidem (195) placed third; Connor Klinkhammer (106), Jason Nixon (113), Carson Klinkhammer (120) and Tate Coon (160) all earned fifth place; and Logan Hadley (182) and Gus Miller (220) notched sixth-place finishes.

The ‘Cats finish off the regular season with an Eastern South Dakota Conference dual against Aberdeen Central on Friday at BHS, and then travel to Yankton on Saturday for a tournament.

Saturday’s Les Tlustos

Schoon won his first three matches by fall to advance to the finals, where the sophomore earned a 4-3 decision over Zach Solano of Rapid City Central for the title. He opened with a pin in 1 minute, 42 seconds over Madison’s Donny Price; won by fall in 1:08 over Clay Farmer of West Central; and needed 1:29 to dispatch Lennox’ Tyler Zebell in the semifinals.

Miller defeated Pierre’s Ty Paulsen, 3-0, in the championship match after opening with a 32-second pin of Dell Rapids’ Ethan Brobjorg, who was wrestling unattached. After a 3-0 decision over Pierre’ Pryce Dyk, who was also unattached, the senior advanced to the title tilt with a win by fall in 2:47 over Dell Rapids’ Nick Palmer.

Willert needed just 21 seconds to pin Mitchell Rust of Lennox in his opener; won by fall in 1:42 over Donovan Bain of Yankton; and then won a 3-2 decision over Madison’s Jarred Hodges to reach the championship. But the senior lost by fall in 34 seconds to undefeated Carter Lohr of Sioux Falls Roosevelt.

After a first-round bye, Eidem posted a 10-0 major decision over Evan Hehr of Spearfish before dropping an 11-2 major decision to eventual champion Spencer Sarringar of Pierre. The senior came back with a 28-second pin of Yankton’s Trevor Ellis and then won a 4-0 decision over Mathais Thompson of Rapid City Central in the third-place match.

Connor Klinkhammer opened with a 33-second pin of Dell Rapids’ Jacob Vogel and then followed up with a 15-0 technical fall in 4 minutes over Carter Heumiller of West Central. The sophomore lost by fall to eventual champion Isaac Klinkhammer of Brandon Valley in 5:16 before responding with a pair of wins in the wrestlebacks – by fall in 1:45 over Robby Edberg, wrestling unattached, and a 12-0 major decision over Truman Stoller of Madison. He dropped a 2-0 decision in the consolation semifinals but came back with a 7-0 decision over Rapid City Central’s Cael Larson to place fifth.

Nixon opened with a pin in 1:18 over Ryan Hirschkorn of Harrisburg but dropped into the consolation bracket after losing by fall in 3:01 to Vermillion’s Lucus Anglin. The sophomore posted two wrestleback wins – 4-0 over Riley Williams of Lennox and a 6-4 SV1 defeat of Max Sailor of Spearfish – before falling, 6-2, to Madison’s Colby Mennis in the semis. Nixon then won a 3-1 decision over Brandon Valley’s Tate Johnson for fifth place.

After a first-round bye, Carson Klinkhammer won by fall in 3:46 over Trevon Cross, who was wrestling unattached. The senior then dropped a 6-0 decision to Brandon Valley’s Jack Smith in the semis to move into the consolation bracket, where he wrestled to a 7-2 decision over Noah Dremel, unattached, and Rapid City Central’s Kadyn Kraye, 4-1. Klinkhammer lost 7-1 to Jacob Husby of Vermillion in the semis and bounced back with an 8-0 major decision over Dell Rapids’ Brayden Gee to finish fifth.

After a first-round bye, Coon posted a win by fall in 3:16 over Pierre’s Garrett Leesman but dropped a 5-3 decision to Kobe Kortan of Roosevelt in the semifinals. The senior then needed just 22 seconds to pin Dell Rapids’ Gage Carr before winning a 3-0 decision over Kyle Foote of Mitchell. After losing a 3-1 SV1 match to Rapid City Central’s Blake Anderson, Coon edged West Central’s Tristen Boeckholt, 5-4, in the fifth-place match.

Hadley pinned Yankton’s Korbin Postma in 2:44 in his opener, but then lost by fall in 3:53 to Roosevelt’s Joey Otta to drop to the consolation bracket. After a bye in the wrestlebacks, the senior defeated Cole Leighton of Madison, 4-2, before losing, 7-2, to West Central’s Jared Mettle. In the fifth-place match, Otta won a 12-2 major decision as Hadley finished sixth.

Gus Miller opened with a 10-4 decision over Mitchell’s Zeb Parsons before losing by fall in 28 seconds to Timmy Paris of Rapid City Central to head to wrestlebacks. The freshman won a 4-1 decision over Washington’s Thomas Vissers before pinning Brody Surrell of Vermillion in 4:00. Miller lost by fall in 3:50 to Harrisburg’s Sam Detert and then lost 5-0 to Ben Cavigielli of Dell Rapids in the fifth-place match to finish sixth.

Sam Lehman went 1-2 at 126 pounds as the sophomore opened with a 7-5 decision over Logan Sparks of Mitchell before dropping his next two matches – 3-1 to Vermillion’s Ryne Whisler and by fall in 5:00 to Max Johnson of Harrisburg, who was wrestling unattached.

At 138, Rhett Zelinsky lost by fall in 1:00 to Bailey Mennis of Madison; had a bye in the first round of consolation; and then lost by fall in 2:42 to Mitchell’s Sutton Carpenter.

Justin Devine lost by fall in 1:03 to Yankton’s Ben Tellus in his opening match at 145 pounds, and then dropped an 8-3 SV1 decision to Keegan Binegar of Pierre, who was wrestling unattached.

Luke Rasmussen, wrestling unattached for the Bobcats at 106, went 1-2. After winning by fall in 1:35 over Jagger Gribble of Harrisburg, the seventh-grader dropped a 12-6 decision to Pierre’s Jack Van Camp and then lost a 7-4 decision to Edberg in the wrestlebacks after a first-round bye.
