Schoon, Miller win titles at Madison Invitational

MADISON – Jacob Schoon was dominant and Gus Miller also placed first as the Bobcats finished seventh in the team standings at the Madison Wrestling Invitational on Saturday.

Schoon pinned his way to the title at 182 pounds while improving to 9-0 on the season.

He dropped Watertown’s Josh Tassler in 3:26 in the first round, Chamberlain’s Jasiah Thompson in 54 seconds in the quarterfinals and West Central’s Kadyn Nolz in 1:45 in the semifinals.

Schoon finished it off with a win by fall in 1:58 over Howard’s Isaac Feldhaus in the title bout.

Miller went 4-0 in the 220-pound weight class to push his record to 9-1 on the year.

He advanced via forfeit in the first round and then won three consecutive decisions.

Miller beat Sturgis’ Clayton Smith 4-0 in the quarterfinals and Rapid City Stevens’ Hunter McMath 1-0 in the semifinals.

Miller defeated Spearfish’s Evan Hehr 3-2 in the final.

Rapid City Stevens totaled 197.5 points to take the team title. Sturgis (149) was second and Madison (134.5) third.

Brookings, which had six competitors, ended up seventh at 94.5.

Kingsbury County was 17th in the 20-team field with 45 team points.

Bobcat Logan Bowes was runner-up at 160 pounds.

Following a first-round bye, he beat the Bulldogs’ Jason Peters 8-2 and the Raiders’ Nate Allen 11-5.

Bowes dropped a 2-1 decision – his first loss of the season – to the Scoopers’ Wren Jacobs in the championship.

Tucker Christie placed fourth at 285.

He pinned West Central’s Josh Livermore in 27 seconds and Groton Area’s Adrian Knutson in 1:34. Omaha Central’s Jacob Frezell-McClinton pinned Christie in 2:11 in the semifinals.

Christie bounced back with a quick pin – 22 seconds – against Stevens’ Tyrese Morris in the consolation semifinals but dropped a 4-2 decision (sudden victory) to Wagner’s Dawson Lensing in the third-place.

Nolan Archer (132 pounds) and Jaxon Bowes (138) both went 1-2.

The Knights’ Monte Albrecht (152) and Gavin Holland (182) both posted 4-2 marks to place fifth.

In their fifth-place matchups, Albrecht edged Sturgis’ Justin Burnham 3-2 and Holland pinned Kadyn Nolz in 4:16.

Nolan Coughlin (132) finished 3-3 and took sixth.

Brookings returns to action with a dual at Pierre on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
