Schoon wins title, Bobcats take 11th at Yankton Invitational

YANKTON – Jacob Schoon claimed the 170-pound individual title to help lead Brookings to an 11th-place team finish at Saturday’s Yankton Invitational.

Rapid City Stevens edged Pierre by nine points to win the team championship as the Raiders finished with 222.5 points to the Governors’ 213.5. Mitchell was third with 126.5; followed by Vermillion (121), Yankton (118.5); and Sioux Falls Roosevelt (118).

The Bobcats finished with 76 as five other individuals placed in the top eight to go along with Schoon’s title.

Schoon received a first-round bye before winning by fall in 1:39 over Lincoln’s Jacob Murphy. He then won by fall in 1:11 over Owen Warren of Yankton to advance to the title match, where he won a 7-0 decision over O’Gorman’s Zach Witte to win the championship.

At 113 pounds, Connor Klinkhammer won by fall over Carson Holt, Sioux Falls O’Gorman in 52 seconds to open the tournament. He then won a 4-2 decision over Pierre’s Jace Bench-Bresher before losing 5-2 to Cody Stockman of Rapid City Stevens. In consolation action, he won a 6-2 decision over Madison’s Sam Olson, but lost 4-3 to William George of Douglas in the third-place match to finish fourth.

At 160, Logan Bowes won by fall in 1:25 over Ben Zarr of Lennox before dropping to the consolation bracket when he lost by fall in 51 seconds to Josh Crownover of Bon Homme/Scotland/Avon. In the wrestlebacks, he won an 11-2 major decision over Stevens’ Steele Fuegen and won by fall in 3:40 over Braedon Treadway of Lincoln, but lost an 8-0 major decision to Madison’s Jarred Hodges. In the fifth-place match, he lost a 6-4 decision to Collin Becker of Dakota Valley to finish sixth.

At 285, Tucker Christie lost a 10-6 decision to Thomas Fischer of Lennox in the opening round. In consolation action, he won a 3-0 decision over Mitchell’s Wyatt Winter; won a 6-4 sudden victory match over Trevor Ellis of Yankton; and won a 4-2 over Micah Deboer of BH/S/A. A 5-3 loss to O’Gorman’s Kenley Lambert sent him into the fifth-place match where he lost a 3-1 decision to Zechariah Patterson of Stevens to finish sixth.

At 220, Gus Miller won by fall in 3:40 over Pierre’s Gunnar Gehring, but then lost a 5-3 decision to Jace Johnson of Wagner to drop to wrestlebacks. In the consolation bracket, he won by fall in 1:59 over Lincoln’s Marco Cosic before losing a 6-2 decision to Mitchell’s Beau Foote. He finished his day with a 4-0 decision over Mitchell Kistner of Dakota Valley to place seventh.

At 138, Sam Lehman won by fall in 3:31 over Dakota Valley’s Robert Streeter in the first round before losing by a 15-0 technical fall in 5:06 to Carlos Ruffo of Yankton. In wrestlebacks, he won an 8-0 major decision over Roosevelt’s Ethan Mills, but lost 3-2 in a tie-breaker to Tigh Hight of O’Gorman. In the seventh-place match, he lost a 1-0 decision to Mitchell’s Cole Gehrke to finish eighth.

At 120, Jaxon Bowes lost by fall in 1:53 to Mitchell’s Kyle Bauder and then lost an 8-2 decision to Aaron Ideker of O’Gorman to be eliminated.

At 132, Jacob Montis lost by fall to Douglas’ Deveyn Swezey in 3:17; received a bye in the wrestlebacks, but then lost by fall in 1:45 to Kiet Gilberts of Tea Area.

At 182, Aaron Schmidt lost by fall in 1:39 to O’Gorman’s Jon Binstock, and then, lost by fall in 4:21 to Jordan Gall of BH/S/A.
