S.D. Community Foundation lends support to humanities council

Posted

PIERRE – The South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) recently awarded the South Dakota Humanities Council with a $9,864 Community Innovation Grant.

Offered in partnership with the Bush Foundation, the Community Innovation Grant program supports efforts to find breakthrough solutions to community challenges. Funds will assist with costs of hosting a two-day training for project scholars and coordinators that will be sent to South Dakota communities as part of “Democracy and the Informed Citizen.”

“For the South Dakota Humanities Council, funding from the SDCF through the Bush Foundation was truly a formula for community innovation,” said Sherry DeBoer, executive director, South Dakota Humanities Council. “It made possible the specialized training from the Oregon Humanities, which provided the nucleus for preparing facilitators to lead reflective conversations about current events and information literacy throughout South Dakota.”

Democracy is dependent upon its citizens being able to decipher all the news and information directed at them. Led by the Oregon Humanities Council, “Democracy and the Informed Citizen” training will be open to faculty from the host institution (SDSU), the host community (Brookings) and North Dakota Humanities Council scholars.

Partners in this effort include the South Dakota Newspaper Association and South Dakota Public Broadcasting. Community forums will be held in at least 10 South Dakota communities focusing on locally identified issues.

“We are proud to partner with the South Dakota Humanities Council to bring this training to South Dakota”, said Ginger Niemann, senior [rogram officer, SDCF. “We are bombarded with information coming at us from numerous sources. It is imperative that we train people to be critical thinkers.”

The South Dakota Community Foundation will award $400,000 in Community Innovation Grants during 2018. For more information or to apply for a grant, visit https://sdcommunityfoundation.org/for-nonprofits/community-innovation-grants/.
