SD State to hold Fall Festival of Music

BROOKINGS – The South Dakota State University School of Performing Arts will hold its first-ever Fall Festival of Music, featuring four large-ensemble concerts in four days.

The festival kicks off with the SDSU Concert Choir performing at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9 in the Performing Arts Center. Directed by Laura Diddle, the choir will perform “Sing Unto God” by University of Minnesota composer Paul Fetler and “I Lift Up My Eyes” by Jocelyn Hagen, among others. The concert will conclude with selections from Brahms’ “Liebeslieder Waltzes.”

The SDSU Wind Symphony performs at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 10, also in the PAC. The Wind Symphony will feature works by American musical pioneer Leonard Bernstein, in celebration of his centennial birthday. Highlights include “Symphonic Dances” from “West Side Story” and “Make our Garden Grow” from “Candide.”

Under the direction of David Reynolds, the SDSU/Civic Orchestra presents “The Spirit of the Dance” Nov. 11, at 4 p.m. in the PAC. Highlights from Tchaikovsky’s ballets “Nutcracker” and “Sleeping Beauty” as well as music by Antonin Dvorak, Leroy Anderson and John Rutter will be performed.

The choir, wind symphony, and orchestra concerts are free to attend.

The festival concludes with a special Veterans Day tribute as The Pride of the Dakotas Marching Band presents its biennial indoor concert Nov. 12 at 8 p.m. in the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex. Tickets are $8 for adults and will be sold at the door. All students will be admitted free with ID.
