STOCKTON, Calif. – Ryan McDonald doubled in the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth inning and South Dakota State relievers Brett Mogen and Bret Barnett combined for four shutout innings for a Jackrabbit squad that picked up its first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Pacific Friday night at Klein Family Field.

SDSU improved to 1-3, while the Tigers dropped to 3-2.

Trailing 1-0, the Jackrabbits scored both of their runs in the sixth. Landon Badger started the rally by drawing a leadoff walk. He later advanced to second on an error and took third on a single to center field by Braeden Brown that forced a pitching change. Badger scored the tying run on a groundout off the bat of Gus Steiger before McDonald stepped to the plate and launched a double to left-center field that brought home Brown.

SDSU’s two other hits in the game were both by Luke Ira – a bunt single in the fifth inning and a double in the ninth.

Lucas Sweany took the loss for Pacific. He struck out four and walked two in five-plus innings.

A freshman from Woodbury, Minnesota, Mazur worked the first five innings for the Jackrabbits and earned his first collegiate victory after working around five walks and two hits while striking out two.

Game 2 of the series is scheduled for 1 p.m. Pacific Time (3 p.m. Central) on Saturday.
