BROOKINGS – The suicide squeeze was on, and the Jackrabbits executed to perfection.
Skyler Wenninger’s bunt with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning plated Landon Badger with the winning run as South Dakota State beat IPFW 1-0 in a Summit League series opener Friday afternoon at Erv Huether field.
Badger drew a walk to open the 11th, moved to second on Philip Jacobson’s sacrifice bunt and advanced to third via a wild pitch.
The Jackrabbits posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 2014. They haven’t allowed a run in the past 22 1/3 innings.
Brady Stover, Derek Feige and Chris Halbur combined on a seven-hitter against the Mastodons.
Halbur (1-0) picked up the win after giving up a pair of singles and striking out three batters over the final three innings. He has not allowed a run and surrendered just five hits in 15 innings (10 appearances) this season.
Stover, the starter, gave up five hits with seven strikeouts and four walks in 6 2/3 innings of action. Feige retired all four batters he faced, including two by strikeout.
Matt Johnson finished 2-for-4 with a double and Wenninger was 2-for-5 – the former has reached base safely in all 21 games this season.
IPFW leadoff hitter Jackson Boyce ended up 2-for-3 with a pair of walks. Shannon Baker had a double.
Dru Sebastian, who entered in the 11th, took the loss on the mound.
Mastodon starter Jake Weber allowed three hits with three strikeouts and four walks in six innings. Brandon Phelps gave up three hits with six strikeouts and a pair of walks in four innings of work.
The Jackrabbits left 11 runners on base and the Mastodons stranded nine.
SDSU twice loaded the bases with one out, but a double play ended the threat in the fifth inning and consecutive strikeouts halted the rally in the eighth.
Notes: SDSU did not allow a run in the final 2 1/3 innings of its 6-2 loss at Oral Roberts on Sunday and then blanked Dakota Wesleyan 1-0 on Wednesday. … It marked the Jackrabbits’ third shutout of the season. … The last time SDSU posted consecutive shutouts, it beat Omaha 1-0 (7 innings) and 3-0 (9 innings) at home on May 3, 2014.
