BROOKINGS – South Dakota State freshman Marisa Schulz scored her first career goal as the Jackrabbits beat North Dakota 1-0 in a nonconference women’s soccer match that was shortened due to lightning Friday night at Fishback Soccer Park.
"Obviously, the result was great," Brock Thompson told SDSU Sports Information. "It's nice to get a win after last weekend. More importantly, I'm really proud of how we came out in the second half and played well. We talked all week about starting the second half better and I'm happy with the performance tonight. More than anything, that's something we can hang our hat on."
Play was halted with 18:34 remaining and, following a 30-plus minute delay, the match was called.
SDSU, playing into a stiff breeze in the opening half, scored in the 44th minute as Schultz found the back of the net on an assist from Nicole Hatcher.
The Jackrabbits dominated the game statistically.
They held a 20-3 advantage in shots, including a 5-1 edge on goal. SDSU also took five corner kicks to UND’s one.
Tori Poole and Biance Madonia both took five shots – the former had one on goal. Hatcher had three shots, including one on goal.
Maggie Smither made one save in 71:26 of game time to pick up the win in goal.
Julia Lam picked up a yellow card late in the first half.
Fighting Hawks goalkeeper Catherine Klein made four saves.
South Dakota State (1-2) plays at UMKC on Sunday at 1 p.m.
North Dakota (2-1) heads to Auburn on Sunday for a 6 p.m. matchup.
