SDSU comes back against Denver, 80-68

DENVER, Colo. – The South Dakota State men’s basketball team rode Douglas Wilson’s career-high 31 points to a 80-68 comeback victory against Denver Wednesday night.

The Jacks got behind 25-15 with 9:13 left in the first half. They were able to stay within 10 points the rest of the first half and the Pioneers took a 46-37 lead into halftime. 

Denver stretched its lead to 50-39 two minutes into the second half. That’s when the Jacks went on a 9-2 run to cut the lead to three with 11 minutes left in the game. SDSU then took its first lead of the night when Wilson hit a jumper to make it 55-54 with 7:30 left in the game. The Jacks were up 63-60 with 4:13 left in the game and went on a 7-1 run to pull away and improve to 12-7 overall and 3-1 in the Summit League.

Wilson grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to go along with his 31 points. Matt Dentlinger had 12 points and six rebounds. Freshmen Noah Freidel and Baylor Scheierman each had 11 points. Alex Arians had 10 points and six rebounds.

The Jacks shot 50% from the field, but the story of the game was their production from the free throw line. SDSU went 22-27 from the charity stripe and Wilson was 7-8. They were just 2-9 from three.

SDSU held Denver (4-14, 0-4) to 39.7% shooting from the field and the Pioneers were 1-20 from three. Ade Murkey led the way for Denver with 17 points. Robert Jones had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Jase Townsend had 15 points and Taelyr Gatlin had 11.

The Jacks outrebounded the Pioneers 39-34. SDSU had 12 turnovers and Denver had eight. The Pioneers had 23 fouls while the Jackrabbits had 20. Denver went 17-23 from the free throw line.

The Jacks will stay on the road for their next game as they will play Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
