VERMILLION – South Dakota State handled rival South Dakota 79-61 during Summit League men’s basketball action Sunday evening at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.

“I’m proud of our guys and how focused we were,” coach T.J. Otzelberger told SDSU Sports Information. “I thought we played the game we needed to play, especially on the defensive end of the floor. I think sharing the basketball was really important as well, and I thought our guys did a great job of that.”

Skyler Flatten led the way with 20 points and nine rebounds.

Redshirt-freshman Alex Arians had a career game with a double-double of 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting and 10 boards to go with five assists.

Tevin King and David Jenkins both added 14 points.

Mike Daum was limited to four points on 1-of-5 shooting in 23 minutes. He grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Jackrabbits led 37-25 at halftime.

The Coyotes twice pulled within eight after the break, before SDSU took control with a 12-0 run.

Daum got it going with a layup at the 15:10 mark of the period. Arians sandwiched a bucket and a 3-pointer around a pair of David Jenkins free throws, before King buried a trey to make it 53-33 with 12:07 remaining.

USD pulled within 61-48 with 7:10 to go; however, consecutive 3-balls by Arians and Flatten gave the Jackrabbits a 67-48 cushion with 5:45 showing on the clock.

The Jackrabbits’ lead peaked at 25 points – 77-52 – with 2:17 to play.

SDSU shot 46.9 percent (30-of-64) from the field and limited USD to 32.8 percent (21-of-64).

The Coyotes’ Stanley Umude scored a game-high 26 points, grabbed nine boards and blocked three shots. USD was without top player Trey Burch-Manning, who dressed but was in a walking boot.

South Dakota (7-9, 1-2) welcomes Purdue Fort Wayne on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Notes: Daum remained in 28th place in NCAA Division I history with 2,659 career points. He has 1,042 rebounds. … Jenkins, a sophomore, has 900 points in 52 career games.
