SDSU drops two matches in Jackrabbits Invitational

BROOKINGS – Valparaiso and Northern Arizona both swept South Dakota State to close out the Hampton Inn Jackrabbits Invitational on Saturday at Frost Arena.

Cal State Bakersfield (4-2) beat Northern Arizona 3-1 in the other match to finish with a perfect 3-0 mark in the event. The Lumberjacks (3-3) finished 2-1, the Crusaders (2-4) went 1-2 and the Jackrabbits (2-6) ended up 0-3.

Makenzie Hennen was named to the all-tournament team for the hosts.

SDSU next competes in the UND Classic in Grand Forks, N.D., taking on Appalachian State at 9 a.m. and George Washington at 4:30 p.m. on Friday before facing the host Fighting Hawks at 11 a.m. Saturday.

• Northern Arizona 3, SDSU 0

Kaylie Jorgenson tacked up 14 kills, an ace and a block assist as the Lumberjacks won 25-15, 25-16, 25-19.

Heaven Harris added 10 kills and a block. Ohiyah Shirley totaled nine kills.

Abby Stomp guided the offense with 29 set assists. Brooke Donnelly led the defense with 19 digs and Shirley added 17.

The Jackrabbits’ Makenzie Hennen had nine kills, Macy Smith added seven, Sierra Peterson posted six to go with an ace and a block assist, and Erin Cutts had five to go with one block assist.

Mattison Munger dished out 28 set assists and Ellie Benson came up with 25 digs.

• Valparaiso 3, SDSU 0

The Crusaders won by the set scores of 25-15, 25-23 and 25-23.

Katherine Carlson had 10 kills, 1 1/2 blocks (one solo) and a service ace. Ally Cummings, an all-tournament performer, added nine kills and 1 1/2 blocks. Sydney Bronner contributed seven kills and three blocks (one solo).

Brittany Anderson logged 34 set assists and 14 digs. Rylee Cookerly had 15 digs.

For the Jackrabbits, Sierra Peterson finished with seven kills and two blocks (one solo). Payton Richardson had seven kills and 1 1/2 blocks. Makenzie Hennen contributed six kills and 1 1/2 blocks (one solo). Hanna Jellema added four kills, two aces and a block assist.

Mattison Munger tallied 23 set assists and Ellie Benson notched nine digs.

• CSU Bakersfield 3, Northern Arizona 1

The Roadrunners lost the first set 25-21, but bounced back to win the next three sets by matching 25-17 margins to complete the perfect weekend.

Haylee Roberts finished with 15 kills and a block. Sydney Haynes added 13 kills and 1 1/2 blocks. Briannah Mariner totaled 10 kills and a block, while Aleksand Djordevic posted eight kills and 2 1/2 blocks (two solo).

Fabiana Andrade (25) and Sidney Wicks (23) combined for 48 set assists. Emily Lopes came up with 39 digs.

Haynes, Lopes and Roberts were all named to the all-tournament team.

For the Lumberjacks, Kaylie Jorgenson had 13 kills, an ace and a block. Sydney Lema added 10 kills, Heaven Harris seven and Abby Akin six to go with three blocks (two solo).

Abby Stomp tallied 32 set assists and Lema led four NAU players in double figures with 19 digs.

Jorgenson and Harris earned all-tournament honors.
