SDSU falls in 5 at UND

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – North Dakota edged South Dakota State 26-24, 25-20, 23-25, 24-26, 15-12 in a key Summit League volleyball match Sunday afternoon.

UND (12-16) now sits in sixth place at 4-10 in league play, while SDSU (6-20) is tied for eighth at 3-11.

The Fighting Hawks’ Ashley Brueggeman had 13 kills, three blocks, two service aces and 17 digs. Taylor Riedl tallied 14 kills, an ace, a block and 13 digs. Brynn Nieukirk contributed 14 kills and 1 1/2 blocks (one solo). Lydia Rutten contributed 11 kills and 2 1/2 blocks (two solo).

Peyton Sewell dished out 53 set assists to go with five kills, three aces and a solo block. Darian Chwialkowski came up with 24 digs and Madi Hart added 11. Lexi Ahrens notched seven kills and two blocks (one solo).

For the Jackrabbits, Ashlynn Smith finished with 17 kills, a block and eight digs. Crystal Burk added 16 kills, an ace and 15 digs. Makenzie Hennen ended up with 15 kills and a block assist. Anna Nerad chipped in with nine kills, two aces and a pair of blocks (one solo). Tori Thompson recorded nine kills and 1 1/2 blocks (one solo).

Madison Fay dished out 45 set assists and notched 14 digs. Tatum Pickar came up with 17 digs.

South Dakota State closes the season playing at Purdue Fort Wayne on Friday at 7 p.m. and playing host to Omaha on Sunday at 1 p.m.
