Note: Throughout Spring Football, GoJacks.com will take an in-depth look at various position groups. The first installment of the Spring Report focuses on the Jackrabbit quarterbacks.

The South Dakota State University football team features one of the top playmakers at the quarterback position in the Football Championship Subdivision in Taryn Christion, but developing depth at the position remains a priority during the spring season.

A two-time finalist for the STATS FCS Walter Payton Award and a starter in each of his first three seasons, the dual-threat Christion enters his senior season already holding more than a dozen school records. He is coming off a 2017 season in which he set an SDSU single-season record with 35 touchdown passes and also established a new Jackrabbit career standard for total offense with 9,697 yards. A Sioux Falls native, Christion has compiled the two best single seasons for both passing yards and total offense in each of the last two years.

None of the other three quarterbacks on the spring roster have attempted a pass in game action for the Jackrabbits. Sophomore Kanin Nelson has the most experience in the Jackrabbit system behind Christion as he begins his third spring in the program, while junior Justin Roberts and redshirt freshman Ethan Bullock each have completed a full year at SDSU. Roberts transferred to SDSU last spring from NCAA Division II Nebraska-Kearney.

Alec Cromer, who was listed at No. 3 on the depth chart at the quarterback position throughout last season, has moved full-time to punter.
