DENVER – South Dakota State held off Denver 81-77 in a foul-filled Summit League men’s basketball matchup Thursday night.

The Jackrabbits shot 46.9 percent (15-of-32) and hit seven 3-pointers while building a 45-31 halftime advantage. They pushed the lead to 20 points – 53-33 – with 16 minutes remaining.

SDSU made just seven of its 26 shot attempts after the break (26.9 percent).

The Jackrabbits committed 25 fouls and went 26-of-36 at the foul line, while the Pioneers were whistled for 29 fouls and ended up 20-of-28 at the stripe.

David Jenkins Jr. scored a game-high 31 points. Reed Tellinghuisen chipped in with 16 markers.

Mike Daum overcame a tough shooting night – 4-of-16 – to post his sixth consecutive double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds before fouling out. Tevin King and Ian Theisen also fouled out.

All five of Denver’s starters reached double-digit points, and each of them also had at least four fouls.

Jake Krafka and Daniel Amigo both totaled 14 points and eight rebounds, while Ade Murkey also scored 14 points. Jake Pemberton tallied 13 points before fouling out and Joe Rosga chipped in with 12 markers.

The Pioneers chipped away after facing the 20-point deficit, cutting the lead to nine – 65-56 – with 4 1/2 minutes to play. They pulled within five points three times down the stretch, the last occurrence coming at 79-74 with 40 seconds to go.

Tellinghuisen hit a free throw on the other end, before Amigo scored down low to leave the score at 80-76 with 14 seconds left; however, that would be as close as Denver (10-14, 9-1) would get.

South Dakota State (21-6, 9-1) plays at Oral Roberts on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Notes: Daum moved from 14th to 13th on the Summit League career scoring list with 2,020 points, passing Oral Roberts’ Ken Tutt (2,019 from 2003-07). He has 624 points and 267 rebounds through 27 games, good for averages of 23.11 and 9.89, respectively.
