SDSU Indoor Classic concludes

BROOKINGS – Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex and Jackrabbit school records were broken over the weekend during the SDSU Indoor Classic.

Men

Kyle Burdick broke the SJAC record in the 3,000-meter run on Friday with a time of 8 minutes, 7.26 seconds – the second fastest clocking in school history.

He kept things going Saturday by shattering the SJAC mark in the mile – 4:04.89. The time leads the Summit League this season and ranks third all-time at SDSU.

Colton Bender re-set the school mark in the weight throw for the third week in a row, recording a heave of 68 feet, 10 inches. That ranked 23rd in Division I at the time.

Bryant Courter re-set the school record in the triple jump for the third time this season with a meet-record mark of 50-4 1/2. He took third in the long jump (24-0 1/4).

Chase Cayo placed second in the 5,000 in 14:29.46. Mary’s Derek Myers won with a 14:28.82 clocking.

Trent Francom cleared 15-11 to win the pole vault.

Women

Krista Steele won the 600 in 1:32.63 on Friday and the 800 with a 2:10.33 clocking Saturday. Both times rank second all-time for the Jackrabbits.

Rachel King broke the indoor school record in the 5K in her first attempt of the season, finishing in 16:29.88 – nearly 11 seconds faster than the previous record. She placed third in the event as Iowa Central Community College’s Adva Cohen set the pace at 16:16.5.

Former Estelline standout Savannah Dolezal set a PR in the 400 – 56.21. She’s still third in the school annals as she ended up fourth in the meet.

Dolezal, Vanessa Lane, Sandra Gramer and Allison Sebern won the 4x400-meter relay with a 3:49.38 clocking.

Boys’ 1,600

Prairie City native and Bison senior Daniel Burkhalter took the crown by more than 7 seconds with a time of 4:22.97 on Saturday afternoon.

The South Dakota State commit won the last three Class B State Cross Country Meet titles after taking second in 2014, third in 2013 and fifth in 2012.

He’s also excelled in the Class B State Track and Field Meet, with three victories in the 1,600 meters (2015-17) and two titles in the 3,200 (2016-17). Also in the 1,600, Burkhalter was second in 2014 and eighth in 2013. Also in the 3,200, he placed fourth in 2015, second in 2014 and third in 2013. He added a third-place showing in the 800 in 2017.

Team points

SDSU swept, as the men had 42.5 points and the women totaled 34. Northern Iowa was second in both with 29 and 28 points, respectively.
