SDSU men 2nd, women 4th after Day 1

SIOUX FALLS - The South Dakota State swimming and diving teams finished day one of the Summit League Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships presented by U.S. Air Force Special Operations Wednesday night.

“Great swims tonight,” said SDSU head coach Doug Humphrey. “We are faster than a year ago. We had a breakout performance, shattering a school record. What a way to start off a meet.”

The Jackrabbit men sit in a three-way tie for second while the women are in fourth through the first day of competition.

The Jackrabbits got on the board with the first event due to a seventh place finish from Quincee Simonson in the women’s 3-meter dive with a score of 234.70. Abbigail Rouse finished 12th, scoring a 206.25.

In the 200 medley relay, both the men and women posted season-best times with their respective ‘A’ squads. The women (Nguyen, Beckman, Davis, Langerud) swam a 1:46.50 to place fifth, while the men (Miller, Rumrill, Watkins, Skinner) swam a 1:30.74 to place fourth.

Both the women’s and men’s teams placed third in the 800 free relay with season-best times. The women (Bruyckere, Pincus, Santillan, Currie) posted a 7:35.04 and the men (Brenner, Watkins, Miller, Kraft) swam a 6:43.36. In Brenner’s 200 yard leg of the relay in 1:37.82, beating SDSU’s school record by over two seconds.

Up Next – The Jacks return to the pool Thursday with swimming prelims starting at 10 a.m., diving prelims a 1 p.m. and finals at 5 p.m.
