SDSU men’s basketball announces four signees on Wednesday

South Dakota State men’s basketball coach T.J. Otzelberger announced four additions to the Jackrabbit basketball program as part of Wednesday’s national signing day. Three incoming freshman and a junior transfer will enroll at SDSU for the 2019-20 season and be eligible to play immediately for the Jackrabbits.

“This is an extremely talented class for us,” Otzelberger said. “As a group they bring excellent positional size, passing ability and a winning mentality. We look forward to all four young men having a positive impact on our program.”

• Owen Coburn – 6-10, 235, C/F, Spirit Lake, Iowa; Spirit Lake H.S.

Will graduate from Spirit Lake High School (Spirit Lake, Iowa) in May 2019 ... earned Second Team IPSWA Class 3A All-State, 3A IBCA All-Sub State and First Team All-Lakes Conference (unanimous) honors as a junior while averaging 20.1 points and 11.1 rebounds per game ... named all-substate and first team all-conference (unanimous) as a sophomore, putting up 18.2 points and 9.5 rebounds per game ... played his freshman season at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn High School before transferring to Spirit Lake High School ... during his rookie campaign averaged 11 points and seven rebounds per contest and was named All-War Eagle Conference honorable mention .... born March 1, 2000 in Spencer, Iowa ... son of Ian and Shelly Coburn ... both parents played basketball at Westmar College (Iowa) ... planning to major in business economics.

Otzelberger on Coburn: “Owen is a versatile front-line player who can score on the block or from the perimeter. The physical presence he brings on the interior will be impactful for our defense.”

• Caleb Grill – 6-3, 180, G, Maize, Kan.; Maize H.S.

Will graduate in May 2019 from Maize High School (Maize, Kan.) ... picked First Team All-State (Class 5A) by Topeka Capital Journal, Wichita Eagle and CatchItKansas in 2018 ... named 2018 Third Team All-State (All Classes) by Wichita Eagle ... selected as 2018 All-AVCTL I First Team and Most Valuable Player and picked up All-Metro First Team honors from Wichita Eagle ... averaged 17 points, four rebounds and three assists per game as a junior while leading team to AVCTL DI title ... born June 15, 2000 in Wichita, Kansas ... son of Chris and Lena Grill ... father, Chris, played basketball at Wichita State ... plans to major in education.

Otzelberger on Grill: “Caleb is an electric scorer who can knock down the 3-point shot or finish with authority at the rim. He’s a phenomenal passer and takes tremendous pride in making plays for his teammates.”

• Baylor Scheierman – 6-6, 180, G, Aurora, Neb.,; Aurora H.S.

Will graduate in May 2019 from Aurora High School (Aurora, Nebraska) ... First Team All-State (Class B), All-Area and All-Conference selection in 2018 ... averaged 16.1 points, six assists, six rebounds and 2.5 steals per game as a junior ... three-time academic honor roll selection (2016-18) ... born Sept. 26, 2000 in Hastings, Nebraska ... son of Scott and Shannon Scheierman ... dad, Scott, played basketball and mom, Shannon, played volleyball at Hastings College ... major is undecided.

Otzelberger on Scheierman: “Baylor is a gifted passer and playmaker who really excels in transition. His basketball IQ and natural feel for the game will be a huge positive for our program.”

• Doug Wilson – 6-7, 210, F, Des Moines, Iowa;  Kirkwood CC, Hoover H.S.

Will graduate from Kirkwood Community College (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) in May 2019 ... 2018 NJCAA Second Team All-American and First Team All-Region selection ... averaged 14.1 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game while shooting 69.2 percent from the field as a freshman ... helped team to a 24-6 record and regular season ICCAC title in 2017-18 ... graduated from Hoover High School (Des Moines, Iowa) in May 2017 ... born Jan. 7, 1999 in Evanston, Illinois ... son of Jamicha Tracey ... aunt, Jahzinga Tracey, was an all-conference selection at Indiana University of Pennsylvania ... major is undecided.

Otzelberger on Wilson: “Doug possess a tremendous motor and elite-level athleticism. Offensively, he is a mismatch player and defensively, he has the unique ability to defend all five positions.”
