SDSU men's tennis claims first win

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The South Dakota State men's tennis team captured its first win of the season with a 6-3 victory over Westmont College on Thursday afternoon at the Abbott Tennis Courts.

“Both of our teams have been taking advantage of the hours the we have available to work hard on specific parts of there game," SDSU head coach Joey J. Barnes said. "What more can I ask from my teams than to give their best at all times.

“Today, they fought. We still have a long way to go but to obtain success, we must be willing to take a small balanced step."

Elliot Ward and Lucas Pereira claimed the first point for SDSU with an 8-5 victory at No. 3 doubles.

Jonny Higham and Marco Paulo Castro defeated Philipp Sibbel and JT Joens, 8-4 at No. 1.

Gabriel Santos captured the first singles win with a 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory at No. 4. Pereira topped Luke Barnard, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.

At No. 5 singles, Chuck Tang upended Tommy Nightingale, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Emerson Styles finished off the wins with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory at No. 1.

The Jacks close out their spring break trip with a match against Azusa Pacific today.
