MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Madison Guebert (24) and Macy Miller (23) combined for 47 points as South Dakota State beat Mid-American Conference preseason favorite Central Michigan 80-71 on Monday night at McGuirk Arena.

The Jackrabbits (2-1) and Chippewas (1-1) are Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, in the Collegeinsider.com Mid-Major Women’s Basketball Poll. CMU returned three starters from last year’s squad, which went 30-5 and advanced to the Sweet 16.

Guebert went 6-of-13 from 3-point range and 6-of-6 at the free-throw line while adding four rebounds and two assists.

Miller was 9-of-16 from the field, hitting one trey, and 4-of-4 at the stripe. She grabbed six rebounds, dished out five assists and came up with a pair of steals.

The Chippewas led 19-17 after a quarter and the score was tied at 37-all at halftime.

SDSU scored first after the break as Miller hit a jumper with 8:18 to go, and the Jackrabbits never trailed in the second half. Myah Selland added a pair of free throws with 7:18 to play.

The lead twice reached nine points – 54-45 with 2:08 left and 56-47 with 1:42 showing on the clock – before CMU cut the deficit to 59-56 heading to the fourth.

Presley Hudson’s free throw with 8:26 remaining in the game pulled the home team within 59-57. Tylee Irwin countered with a bucket for SDSU and Guebert converted two freebies with 6:54 to go.

Later, the lead reached eight points at 67-59 with 5:21 left following back-to-back baskets by Miller.

The Chippewas continued to hang around and eventually pulled within two points – 73-71 – on Hudson’s free throws with 1:28 remaining.

Irwin went 1-of-2 at the line on the other end to put SDSU ahead 74-71.

CMU took possession with a little less than a minute to go but missed a pair of shots, before Miller corralled a defensive rebound. She was fouled and made both charity tosses to make it 76-71 with 18 seconds to play.

Guebert added four free throws with less than 15 seconds remaining to provide for the final margin.

SDSU’s Tagyn Larson finished with 14 points, seven boards and a pair of blocks. Irwin contributed 10 points, Selland six (and six boards) and Rylie Cascio Jensen three.
