SDSU Reining advances to quarterfinals against OSU

WACO, Texas – The South Dakota State equestrian team completed day one of the 2018 NCEA National Championship on Wednesday.

“Our reining squad rode well today,” SDSU assistant coach Logan Pluhar said. “It’s a great credit to the resilience and work ethic that they have exhibited all year long to get to where they are now. In a tough environment, they stepped up today. Our focus remains on taking it one round at a time, one ride at a time and to take care of what we can control.”

In Equitation over Fences, SDSU fell to Oklahoma State, 4-0. Claire Garduno scored a career-high post-season score of a 150.

In Reining, State defeated Delaware State, 3-1 to advance to the next round. Senior Mariah Wright topped Angelina Watts, 136-124.5. Catelyn Hall upended Shelbe Jarrett, 138.5-132.5 and Jordan Gates dropped Monica Ellis, 133-131.5.

Fresno State swept the Jacks, 4-0 in Horsemanship.

South Dakota State and Delaware State tied in Equitation on the Flat. The Hornets won in raw score 599-594. Jacey Chorlton topped Molly Gara, 151-143 and Taylor Duerr upended Erin Gordon, 146-135.
