SDSU Roundup: Men’s basketball team takes fifth at Cayman Islands Classic

GEORGE TOWN, Grand Caymans – The South Dakota State men’s basketball team used a big first half and a late-game flurry to claim a 94-80 win over Buffalo on Wednesday, taking fifth at the Cayman Islands Classic.

The Jackrabbits shot 60.9 percent (28-of-46) from the field while hitting 10-of-21 3-point attempts. They were 28-of-37 at the free-throw line.

Mike Daum led the way with 34 points, posting his 14th career 30-point game as one of three Jackrabbits in double figures.

David Jenkins Jr. tallied 17 points to go with a team-high seven rebounds. Tevin King had 10 points, six rebounds and two assists.

Brandon Key dished out six assists on the day. Daum, Chris Howell (eight points) and Ian Theisen each added eight rebounds.

For Buffalo, Nick Perkins was one of five to score in double figures as the Bulls shot 41.7 percent (30-of-72) from the field and 29 percent (9-of-31) beyond the arc.

Buffalo hit a 3-pointer on its first possession but scored just once more before the under-12 media timeout, allowing South Dakota State to open up an 18-5 advantage at that point. Four minutes later, the Jackrabbits saw their advantage cut to seven – 22-15 – before outscoring Buffalo by 15 in the final 8 minutes to carry a 46-24 lead into the locker room.

Both teams came out firing after the break, and though the Jackrabbits shot over 64 percent in the final 20 minutes, 12 second-half turnovers allowed the Bulls to crawl back within five – 64-59 – with 7:19 remaining. Bus SDSU regained momentum by scoring on 16 of its final 18 possessions to close out the win.

Notes: SDSU is 2-1 all-time against Buffalo and closed out the Cayman Islands Classic with a 2-1 mark, earning fifth-place in the event. … Reed Tellinghuisen moved into a tie for 32nd all-time in scoring at South Dakota State with 1,091 career points. … Tellinghuisen was named to the Cayman Islands Classic All-Tournament. …  Daum is now sixth on the Jackrabbits’ career scoring list with 1,535 career points, moving past Clint Sargent (1,505 from 2007-11) and Steve Brown (1,534 from 1974-78). Jenkins has scored in double figures in six of seven games this season and had a career-high. South Dakota State had all nine players who logged time score.

The Bearcats (6-0) built a 37-20 lead at halftime and shot 50 percent (31-of-62) from the field for the game.

Kyle Washington posted a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds. Gary Clark had 17 points. Jacob Evans, who dished out five assists, and reserve Cane Broome added 10 markers apiece.

The Cowboys (4-1) shot 31.3 percent (15-of-48) and had 14 turnovers. Hayden Dalton scored 15 points.

Swimming and diving

ELMHURST, Ill. – South Dakota State’s Emily Moore and Mitchell Raihle were named the Summit League Divers of the Week.

Moore, a senior from Des Moines, Iowa, broke the school record on the platform at the Mizzou Invite, taking 23rd with a score of 165.95. She finished 19th in the 1-meter prelims with a score of 225.45 and 14th in the 3-meter prelims with a 232.25.

Raihle, a sophomore from Spring Lake Park, Minn., also broke the platform record for the men with a score of 212.5, taking eighth. He placed in the top 10 in all events at the Mizzou Invite, finishing eighth in the 1-meter finals (281.70) and 10th in the 3-meter (259.55).

SDSU is host to St. Cloud State on Jan. 13.

Soccer

ELMHURST, Ill. – South Dakota State’s Tori Poole was named to the Academic All-Summit League team for the second time in her career.

Poole earned All-Summit League First Team honors all four years as a Jackrabbit and closed out her career with 31 career points, notching 12 goals and seven assists.

“We’re proud of Tori,” SDSU coach Brock Thompson said. “Her work on the field and in the classroom over her career has been admirable and extremely consistent.”

The South Saint Paul, Minn., native started all 19 matches for the Jackrabbits this season and recorded a goal with two assists, playing 1,383 minutes in the midfield for the 2017 Summit League regular-season champions.

A Biology (Pre-Med) major, Pool appeared in 80 career matches, tied for most in school history with 75 starts, good for second in the Jackrabbit record book. Her 6,121 total minutes logged ranks third all-time at SDSU.

She was also named Academic All-League in 2016 and is the seventh South Dakota State selection to the team in program history.

To be eligible for the Academic All-League team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale), completed at least one full academic year at the current institution and participated in 50 percent of their team’s competitions. The women’s soccer academic all-league team is made up of the 11 student-athletes receiving the most votes with all ties standing.

The team is voted on by the institution’s faculty athletics representatives and sports information directors.
