SDSU Roundup: Toscano, women’s golf team win Jackrabbit Invitational

LAS VEGAS – Freshman Teresa Toscano of the South Dakota State women's golf team won her first collegiate individual title Saturday at the eighth annual Jackrabbit Invitational.

The defending-champion Jackrabbits won their 12th title in program history and fourth of the season after shooting 302 in the third round for an 890 total at the par-72, 6,105-yard Siena Golf Club.

Toscano shot a 1-under-par 71 in the final round to set the school scoring record for 54 holes – 4-under 212 (73-68-71) – by two strokes. The rookie collected five birdies Saturday and 11 for the tournament while winning by nine shots.

Senior Hallie Getz (73) tied for third at 222 and classmate Megan Mingo (80) tied for 10th at 227.

Playing as an individual, Natcha Srimaneerungroj (81) also tied for 10th with a 227 total.

Islamiah Fuad (78) finished 23rd with a 54-hole tally 236 and Sydney Bormann (84) tied for 24th at 237.

Up Next

South Dakota State returns to action March 16-17 at the Lady Thunderbird Invitational in St. George, Utah. The Jackrabbits won the tournament last year and Getz is the defending individual champion.

Men

LAS VEGAS – The South Dakota State men's golf team shot 297 Saturday to tie for ninth with an 869 total in the eighth annual Jackrabbit Invitational, contested at the par-72, 6,843-yard Siena Golf Club.

Nevada won the 12-team tournament, firing an 823 (277-266-280).

Senior Trevor Tobin (78) led the Jackrabbits, tying for 35th at 219. Senior Grant Smith (72) and freshman Alejandro Restrepo (72) tied for 39th with 220 totals.

Alejandro Perazzo (71) tied for 44th at 222 and fellow sophomore Jaxon Lynn (75) tied for 48th at 223.

Playing as individuals, Jacob Otta (72) tied for 42nd at 221, Zach Sackett (76) tied for 59th at 230, Naqiuddin Fuad (76) tied for 61st at 234 and Michael Duch (82) was 67th with a 248 total.

Softball

CLEARWATER, Fla. – SIU-Edwardsville beat SDSU 4-3 to close out the USF-Under Armour Invitational on Sunday, snapping the Jackrabbits’ five-game win streak.

The Jacks finished 4-1 in the event, including a 2-1 mark over the weekend.

SDSU (12-14) wraps up the tourney portion of its schedule competing in the Iowa Tournament in Iowa City on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Jackrabbits face Valparaiso at 1 p.m. and Northern Illinois at 3:30 p.m. on the opening day.

Sunday

• SIU-Edwardsville 4, SDSU 3

Emily Ensrud went 2-for-4 on the day with a pair of singles and two RBI, while Lyndsey Crist had a home run and Ali Herdliska racked up a double.

In the circle, Abby Deane (6-8) replaced starter Ashlyn Bender in the first and threw the final 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs with four strikeouts. Bender was charged with two runs (one earned) on three hits.

Down 2-0 after the first, SDSU threatened with a pair of runners in the second and third innings, but did not break through until the fourth when Ensrud drove in a pair with a two-out single.

SDSU took the lead in the fifth, 3-2, when Crist led off the inning with a solo blast to center field for her second home run of the season.

SIUE, however, scratched two runs across to regain the lead (4-3) in the bottom of the sixth, sending the Jacks to the plate in the seventh needing a run to extend the game.

Down to its last chance, Crist walked and Herdliska doubled to left as SDSU put runners in scoring position with no outs, but a pop up and double play ended the Jackrabbit rally, and the game.

Saturday

• SDSU 5, Canisius 3

The Jackrabbits scored single runs in the fifth and seven innings for the win.

Ali Herdliska, who totaled two RBIs, and Julia Andersen finished with two hits apiece.

Andersen singled to lead off the fifth frame. She moved to second on Lyndsey Crist’s sacrifice bunt, took third on Herdliska’s fly out and then scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

Crist led off the seventh with a ground-rule double and scored on an Herdliska single soon thereafter to provide for the final margin.

SDSU’s Mallory McQuistan opened the scoring with a home run to lead off the top of the second. The Golden Griffins answered in the bottom of the inning as Moriah Harris doubled and later scored on a wild pitch.

Herdliska came through with an RBI double and later scored on a Brittney Morse single to put the Jackrabbits ahead 3-1 in the third.

Canisius’ Lauren Castro had an RBI single in the third. Samantha Sharkey’s sacrifice fly plated Ashley Barnett, who doubled, to tie the score at 3-all in the fourth.

Abby Deane threw 3 2/3 innings of shutout relief while giving up one hit with four strikeouts and a pair of walks. Ashlyn Bender, the starter, allowed three runs – one earned – on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk.

Madi Weathers took the loss after working 5 2/3 innings.

Castro totaled two hits.

• SDSU 8, Central Connecticut State 5 (8 inn.)

Julia Andersen tripled, single and drove in three runs as the Jackrabbits scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning to secure the win.

Lyndsey Crist homered. Emily Ensrud had two hits and an RBI. Ali Herdliska doubled twice. Erin Mullen also doubled.

Abby Deane gave up five runs – four earned – on eight hits with seven strikeouts and three walks in a complete-game effort.

CCSU’s Brittany McNulla went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs.

Equestrian

BROOKINGS – SMU compiled a higher raw score to beat SDSU in a tiebreack after the teams finished tied at 8-8 in an equestrian matchup Saturday at the DeHaan Equestrian Center.

The Mustangs had a raw score of 1,576.75, compared to the Jackrabbits’ 1,567.25.

SDSU picked up three points in equitation over fences as Allisa Greenwald earned MOP honors with a score of 87 and Blair Wright (84) and Jacey Chorlton (76) also prevailed.

Jessica Martinez was MOP in equitation on the flat with an 85, with Taylor Duerr (82) also picking up a point.

The Jackrabbits’ third MOP came in reigning as Alicia Johnson earned a score of 72. Miranda Sullivan (69) also picked up a point. Nicole Siebold (74) picked up SDSU’s lone point in horsemanship.

South Dakota State finished the season with a 3-8 record.

Baseball

STILLWATER, Okla. – The South Dakota State University baseball team wrapped up the pre-conference portion of its schedule Sunday with a pair of losses to 18th-ranked Oklahoma State at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.

With the 6-3 and 8-3 victories, OSU improved to 9-6 overall. The Jackrabbits dropped to 6-7 on the season.

Game 1

In the opener, Cowboy right-hander Jensen Elliott struck out seven batters over six innings and the OSU offense benefited from nine bases on balls issued by Jackrabbit pitchers en route to a 6-3 victory.

The Jackrabbits scored the first run of the game on three singles and an error in the top of the first inning. Josh Kunzmann tallied the first of the three singles and came around to score on an errant throw after Matt Johnson hit an infield single.

Oklahoma State tied the game two batters into the home half of the first and took the lead for good later in the inning. Cash led off with a walk against Jackrabbit starter Ryan Froom and Garrett McCain followed with a triple to left-center field to plate Ryan Cash. McCain later scored on a wild pitch.

The Cowboys expanded their lead to 4-1 with single runs in the third and fourth innings, the latter of the two runs scoring on a bases-loaded walk to Garrett Benge.

SDSU pulled back to within a run at 4-3 with a pair of two-out runs in the sixth. Anthony Schneider doubled in Johnson with the first run and Schneider crossed home plate after a throwing error following Jake Thompson's infield single.

OSU countered with runs in the seventh and eighth innings on a Jon Littell RBI double and sacrifice fly by Colin Simpson, respectively.

Blake Battenfield shut down the Jackrabbits with three shutout innings to earn the save for OSU. Battenfield struck out three.

Froom tossed the first 3 1/3 innings for the Jackrabbits in suffering his first loss of the season. He struck out two, walked five and surrendered four runs on five hits. Bryce Hanson shut out the Cowboys over the next three innings, striking out three and walking two.

OSU held an 11-7 advantage in hits and was paced by McCain's 3-for-5 performance at the plate. Johnson was the lone Jackrabbit with more than one hit, going 2-for-4.

Game 2

Home runs by McCain and Trevor Boone lifted Oklahoma State to an 8-3 victory to finish off the doubleheader sweep and series victory.

McCain's home run came two batters into the game against SDSU starter Austin Kost, while Boone's solo shot was the beginning of a three-run second inning. The other two runs in the second inning were unearned and included McCain's second RBI of the game on a base hit up the middle.

Oklahoma State starter Parker Scott was lifted with an apparent injury after facing only two batters. Both Nick Smith (single) and Anthony Schneider (hit by pitch) reached base against Scott before Smith scored on the first of four Cowboy errors in the contest.

OSU added a pair of runs in the fifth inning to push the lead to 6-1 and knock Kost out of the game.

SDSU's final two runs of the of the game came on a two-run home run by Matt Johnson to left field. His third home run of the season also extended his season-opening hitting streak to 13 games.

The Cowboys answered with two runs in the home half of the eighth to end hopes of a Jackrabbit comeback. McCain tallied his third hit of the game and scored on an error before Dustin Williams tripled in Simpson with the final run of the game.

OSU out-hit the Jackrabbits, 11-6, in Game 2. Cade Cabbiness also posted three hits for the Cowboys. No Jackrabbit player tallied more than one hit.

Kost struck out four and walked five in 4 2/3 innings. Ethan Kenkel hurled 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Jackrabbits.

Carson Teel, the second of seven OSU pitchers, was credited with the win. Teel and Brady Basso each notched five strikeouts as Cowboy pitchers combined for 18 strikeouts in the contest.

Up Next

The Jackrabbits open Summit League play Friday at Omaha for the first game of a three-game series. First pitch Friday is set for 4 p.m. at Isaacson Park.
